The Red Scare

  1. The Immigration Act (Johnson-Reed Act)
    1. An act for limiting numbers of immigrants entering the US
    2. Wanted to stop immigration because immigrants took jobs and kept wages low
  2. Red Scare
    1. Nationwide fear of communists, socialists, anarchist, and others who oppose official policy
      1. Anarchist
        1. One who doesn't believe in government
      2. Socialist
        1. One who works for equality 
      3. Communist
        1. Wanted all power in government
    2. Why did it happen?
      1. Fear of communist revolution was the core of the Red Scare
      2. We feared community takeover so we made it not happen
    3. Palmer Raids
      1. FBI would go into houses and businesses to find anything associated with communism
      2. Immigrants who had recently arrived in the country were mostly arrested
      3. Alexander Palmer's house was bombed by an anarchist which started the FBI
    4. Effects on America
      1. Fear and paranoia
      2. Hostility towards immigrants

  1. Amelia Earhart
    1. Earhart was on a round world flight when her plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean
    2. People assumed she crashed 
    3. First female to fly over Atlantic Ocean
    4. She was an American aviation pioneer and author

The Scopes Monkey Trial 

  1. John  Thomas Scopes
    1. Born and raised in Kentucky
    2. Taught high school science in Tennessee (substitute teacher)
    3. Conspired to violate the Butler act 
  2. The Butler Act
    1. Law in Tennessee prohibiting any public school teachers from denying the Biblical account of man's origins
    2. Taught instead that we descended from a lower form
  3. The ACLU
    1. American Civil Liberties Union
    2. Advertised in newspaper that they would defend anyone who went against the Butler Act
    3. Clarence Darrow
  4. George Washington Rappleyea
    1. Main instigator in challenging the anti-evolution law
    2. Thought a trial would bring publicity to the town
    3. Convinced Scopes to break the law and had him arrested
  5. William Jennings Bryan
    1. Politician from Nebraska
    2. 3 time democratic nominee for president
    3. Joined the prosecution in Scopes trial 
  6. The Trial
    1. Each day proceedings opened with prayer
    2. Scopes started with the Butler Act violating his teaching rights
    3. Switched to say that the theory of evolution didn't conflict with what the bible says
    4. On 7th day of the trial the defense called Bryan to testify
    5. Clarence Darrow asked him questions that showed his ignorance of science
  7. The Verdict
    1. Only took 8 minutes of deliberation to find him guilty
    2. Judge ordered him to pay the minimum fine of $100
  8. After the Trial
    1. 5 days after the trial, William Jennings Bryan died
    2. People started challenging the Butler Act
    3. The law was repealed in 1976

  1. Model T
    1. First came out on October 1st, 1908
    2. Cost was $850
    3. Cheapest ever sold was $260
    4. Before Model T there were letter cars
    5. More than 15,000,000 Model T's were made
    6. Last day of production for Model T was May 26th, 1927

    1. 1927-1931
    2. Lots of riots because of how great the Model T was
    3. Lots of different styles
    4. 1930-1932 Model A truck
