1920 

1.-Prohibition and gangsters

2.-Women’s rights and freedoms

3.-Politics-elections, Normalcy and isolationism, President’s backgrounds and accomplishments, scandals, Republican philosophy
   - Harding- had many scandals, broke the 18th amendment, had many women brought into the White House. He brought in men into the Government and they weren't truthful. Died of disease while in office.
   - Coolidge- was considered on of the better President, cause he was president during the 1920's
    - Hoover - He was considered one of the worst presidents because he was president when the stock market crashed.  

Republican Philosophy - 1920's
Normalcy- Harding wanted to turn back to Normalcy because of WWI and they wanted to focus on America, not getting involved in foreign affairs   
Trickle- down theory- Republicans gave tax breaks to the rich, so that they would help the middle/lower class people by making more jobs for the middle/lower class                                            people.  
Laissez- faire- the Government stayed out of businesses but caused big monopoly
rugged individualism- you have responsibility do them and good things will come along. 

Teapot Dome Scandal = Teapot Dome was a Navy oil supply and Albert Fall  gave in to two oil companies by bribes the rights to the Teapot Oil fields 

4.-Entertainment, sports, music, radio, movies and fads
-Movies were very popular in the 1920's, they started at silent movies with music and then they went to talkies(people talking)

-Greta Garbo, Clara Bow, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Al Jolson all famous actors.  Marx Brothers, Harry Houdini(magichian 
Sports- became more and more popular during the 1920's
-Boxing, baseball, tennis, football, Golf
-Babe Ruth( Baseball) Jack Dempsey(boxer), Bill Tilden(tennis) Red Grange (Football)
Radio- A lot of people started getting more radios

5.-Economy-Booming economy and stock market, buying on credit, high tariffs
- Most people think that the economy was booming, but a lot of farmers and factory workers were struggling
-Most businesses were doing very well and because most middle/lower class people was paying with credit.  With them using credit they went into debt and people stopped buying things.
- The average income was middle/lower class was lower $5,000 and millionaires were making more than $5,000 
- The stock market was doing very well during the 20's
-High Tariff Policy- Tariff -A tax on a foreign product. Hoover raised the tariff so that more people would buy American products and opening more jobs, but they couldn't trade with other countries.  the High Tariff Policy didn't work because they didn't get to trade with other countries. 

6.-Red Scare-anti-immigration, Sacco and Vanzetti case
- during 1919- 1920 
- a time after WWI were America thought that communism would take over the America
-Karl Marx- was the inventor of communism.  
-People don't have rights, dictators, 
- communism was first set up to be like nobody is rich and nobody is poor, everybody is equal.  They all get equal things.  
-Vladimir Lenin- was the first leader in the Soviet Union who brought communism to Russia. He dies after about 3 or 4 years of being in charge, then Joseph Stalin comes to power and lead to the killing of many people.  
- The Palmer Raids -an attempt to deport all radicals and communists.  Palmer's House was bombed and so that is what lead to find communists and deport them.  
-  Sacco and Vanzetti- were two Italian, catholic, and radical men,  who blamed for murdering a paymaster.  
- The Ku Klux Klan- wanted to keep the people who weren't like them, white and protestant.  
Immigration in the 1920's- The immigration Act of 1924 greatly reduced immigration to the US.  The law was aimed at restriction immigration of Southern Europeans, Eastern Europeans, and Jews. - Severely restricted in the immigration of Africans and prohibited the immigration of Arabs, East Asians, and Indians.-  The purpose of the act of "to preserve the ideal of American homogeneity"

8.-Lots of strikes-Boston Police, US Steel, United Mine Workers
-The government didn't want strikes during WWI because they wanted factories workers to work for the war.  
-A lot of people went on strikes because they were not getting paid enough 
- The three biggest strikes were the Boston Police, US. Steel and United Mine Workers
- The strikers didn't get much out of their strikes.  
- Labor Unions- A group of workers who tried for better benefits.
- Farmers and Factory workers weren't great. 

9.-The Model T and the impact of the automobile
- Cars were invented in Europe in late 1800's and the Model T cars, but in the 1920's more and more people started buying cars off of credit.  
-Transformed the way people live
What impact did cars have on people
    - Better transportation
    - Prices of products would go down because it wouldn't take as long to places
    - Suburbs were started because you could go to the city when ever you wanted. 
    -Allowed people to move away
    -Jobs- building cars, roads, bridges etc.  
-other cars companies- Dodge, Chrysler, Buick
-Route 66-"The Mother Road" A highway  Started in Chicago to Los Angeles 
-NASCAR - started during Prohibition because Bootleggers needed to get alcohol to different places fast, and needed a fast car to get away from the police.  Then they would  
  

10.-Electricity in the homes and new applicances
-Electricity was first invented in 1920.  
-Before electricity people used candles or fire to have light at night.
- with electricity brought better lighting, radio, dishwashers, irons, washing/drying machines, sewing machines. 

11.-Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhardt and the airplane
-Charles Lindebergh " Lucky Lindy" was the first person who flew solo across the Atlantic ocean
- Amelia Earhardt  Was the first women to fly a cross the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean but then disappeared  
- Airplanes were rarely used for passengers and mail. 
- People would do tricks and plane shows.  

12.-Scopes-Monkey Trial
- Science vs. Religion 
- John Scopes was a teacher who taught evaluation.  He was arrested and went to trail was found guilty
 

13.-Stock Market Crash-causes
  Stock- buying parts of a company 
  Dow Jones 30- are the 30 largest companies in the United States (stock market indicator)  

Causes of the Stock Market Crash- 1929
- Stock prices were grossly inflated, did not have real value-watered stock prices 
- over speculation during the 1920's
       * Led to watered stock
- "Buying on margin" = buying stock on credit 
        * led to people being in debt and watered stock prices
- Overproduction of goods- companies were making to much and people aren't buying them
- Uneven distribution of wealth- the rich people getting richer the poor people getting poorer
- Too much borrowing from banks- so people were in debt
- Federal Reserve increased interest rates - set up to help banks and led to too much borrowing of money.  They raised up interest rate so that middle/ lower class                                    weren't borrowing money
- Lack of government regulation- they didn't have any rules on the stock market.  Rich people found it like a game.
