1920's- Joined the League of Nations, They signed 4, 5 and 9 Power pacts.

5 power pacts- US,GB, France, Japan, and Italy would limit naval size
9 power pact- US, GB, France, Italy, Japan, Belgium, Natherlands, portugal, and China agree to the open door policy and guarantee Chinese independence.
Signed the Kellogg-Briand Pact- promised not to solve confilct by war.
Manchuria 1931- They invaded them for resources because they lost a lot of trade during the great depresstion that happened to the US.
Thursday-
July 1937- Japan started to invade China. China was in a civil war at the time.
Rape of Nanking- a mass killing of Chinese people. (300,000), Mass raping of Chinese women and girls, Mass looting and arson
Some in Japan have denied that the military killed civilians for no reason. There was a war crimes trial after the war to try Japanese soldiers for participation.
Throughout WWII, Japan killed almost 6,000,000 People, including Chinese, Koreans, Indonesions.
1937 Quarantine Speech- he said that the peaceful countries need to come together and stop the aggressive countries.
Panay Incident- December 1937 American gunboat was attacked by Japan, 3 US troopes killed, 45 wounded. Japan said it was an accident apologized and paid us.

Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact- USSR and Japan signed an agreement to not fight one another in April, 1941. Japan considered breaking this once Germany(their ally) invaded the USSR in June, 1941, but did not. The USSR broke this treaty when they declared war on Japan in August 9, 1945.
The Road to Pearl Harbor- Hideki Tojo he was making the military decisions, Emperor Hirohito he was the powerful guy.
Admiral Yamamoto- he came up with the attack plan on Pearl Harbor, he didn't want to use the plan, but he had it made for his country. He said that we need to knock them out of the war before they get into it.

Battle Results- 1)All eight US Navy battleships were damaged, with four being sunk. 2) Three crusiers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft ship and one minelayer ship were sank or damaged. 3) 188 US aircraft were destroyed

Pearl Harbor Propaganda- Remeber Peral Harbor
They attacked Peral Harbor because we stopped trading oil with them. When Japan signed an agree went with Soviet Union they knew that no one would stop them because of who their allies were.
Pearl was not the only place that Japan attacked. They attacked many US and British territories.
