Reasons that people opposed FDR's New Deal- It created a very powerful president, they felt he was a dictator, People that the government was way too big, make it Laissez Faire, Some acts were unconsitutional, FDR was making unconstitutional laws, Heavy debt burden, lots of deficit spending.
Some people thought that FDR went way too far, spent too much money. Others said that he didn't do enough, and they thought he needed to do more.
FDR was probably doing just enough.
Father Charles Caughlin-millions of people listened to him, he said that the government should have more of a dictator, he was anti-Jewish. He quit because the radio wanted to know what he said before he said it. He critisized FDR.
Francis Townshed- he was a doctor, he said FDR was not doing enough, He helped get social security get passed, He wanted to help the elderly.
Senator Huey Long- His platform was "share-our-wealth", he was more comunistic. He was shot and killed by Carl Weiss in 1935, Long was protesting against Carl's father so Carl Weiss shot and killed him.
Wednesday-
*Federal Housing Administration- It started in 1934, lowered interest rates, they insured mortgages, it wasn;t that successful. It is still around today. Redlining- Basically discrimination against blacks and hispanics.
1st new deal vs. 2nd new deal- first new deal was focused on helping banks and the stok market, and restoring hope. The 2nd new deal was focused on passing new labor laws, created labor unions and it was also focused on helping the elderly.
Eleanor Roosevelt- she became involved a lot more than former first ladies. She was a very active first lady.
