Week of February 19th-February 23rd

Monday- Snow Day

Tuesday-

Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act- Fights back against the Dust Bowl. I tallowed the government to pay farmers to reduce production as to "conserve soil" and prevent erosion. It was a piece of legislation passed in response to the Supreme Court's unconstitutional ruling of the AAA. Educated farmers on how to use their lands without damaging them. Took immediate action to contain the Dust Bowl's effects by planting trees and native grasses. Three years after the Act was adopted, soil erosion had dropped 65%.

Court Packing Bill- Tried to pack the supreme court full of justices akin to what they want.

Opposition to FDR-

Some say FDR went too far and spent too much money. Others say he didn't do enough and that he needed to do more. The Soviet Union was the only country not impacted by the Great Depression.

It created a very powerful president that led Congress, this was a violation of checks and balances.

It was a radical departure frmo Laissez Faire, created big government

Some acts were unconstitutional and created a heavy debt burden, the US was engaged in deficit spending and this was unhealthy for the economy in the long run.

Father Caughlin- opponent of Roosevelt. First was proponent of the New Deal and started to sour on him because he was too close to the big banks. Anti-semitic person.

Francis Townshend- Critical for not doing enough. Was a docor and saw how the old people were suffering.

Wednesday- Government stepped in and helped people.

Senator Huey Long- "Every man a king" - Share Our Wealth. -Socialism- Cap personal fortunes at $50 million each person, equivalent to about $600 million today. Can't make more than $1 million a year (12 million today). Limit inheritances to $5 million (about $60 million today)- Guarantees every family an annual income of $2000, or one-third the national average. Free vocational or college education Old-age pensions for all persons over 60. Veterans benefits and healthcare. Four week vacation for every worker. Greater regulations. Long was assassinated by Carl Weiss.

The 2nd New Deal- Pass labor laws, create and expand New Deal agencies, establish Social Security for older people and unemployed.

Eleanor Roosevelt- FDR's wife. One of the first First Ladies that played a role in the country. She had to step up and make more appearances and she was very well educated.

1936 Election- FDR vs Al Landon (R)- landslide victory for FDR
