World War One

WWI was fought all over the world. 

War of colonies. 

Mother country is in it, you are in the war too. 

War started down in Serbia.

Czar Nicholas - Ruled Russia, changed after WWI 

Kaiser Wilhelm - Germany

Ally powers:

*United States did not go in until 1917

*Great Britain, France, Italy, Russia, Greece, Albania, Serbia

*During the end of WWI Russia Dropped out - They changed their entire government to communist 

Central Powers:

*The Enemy 

*Germany, Austria Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey(Automaton Empire) 

Characteristics of Europe -- Late 1800's-Early 1900's


*Very nationalistic

*Willing to go to war to protect interests and national honor

*Industrialization was occurring

*Population was increasing

*People were moving from rural areas to the city

*Due to the speed change, traditional values and religion became less important

*Propaganda was common 

*Democratic governments increases

*More people could vote  (the poor)

*Education the masses was important

Causes in WWI

  • Militarism - They were building up armies. To settle disputes. Not really a good thing necessarily.

  • Imperialism - two countries wanted an island - they crash.

  • Nationalism - Proud of your country. It sometimes goes too far.

    • Swept through Europe in the mid to late 1800’s

    • Italy unified in 1871

  • Economic Competition

    • Great Britain, France, and Germany (among others) were competing worldwide for colonies, natural resources, etc.

  • Alliances

    • What is an Alliance?

    • A war could be about to break out if you are making alliances

•Be able to identify the countries of Europe during WWI and what alliance they belonged to

  • Austria-Hungary

    • Multinational, Dual Monarchy

    • 11 major ethnic groups

    • Austrians and Hungarians were the two largest -- both made up less than 50% of population

    • Many different languages, religions and customs

    • Government hated nationalism

•Be able to identify characteristics of Europe in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s

-Very nationalistic

    • There weren’t any real goals but as time went on and casualties and costs increased, winning territory was a must.

•Be able to identify the US policy that Wilson declared when WWI broke out in 1914

  • #1 Reason: Sussex Pledge

  • President Wilson-“End the attack on unarmed ships or risk the severing of diplomatic relations”

  • Germany responded on May 4, the 1916 with the “Sussex Pledge”

    • end the sinking of passenger ships

    • search merchant ships for contraband and make provisions for passengers and crews before sinking merchant ships

  • The German guarantees were generally honored until the announcement of the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare in February 1917

  • #2 Reason: The Zimmerman Note

    • Was a coded telegram send by Foreign Secretary of Germany, Arthur Zimmermann on January 16, 1917

    • It was sent to the German ambassador in the United States

    • Germany tried to get Mexico to declare war on the United States

    • Germany promised Mexico that they would get the Mexican Cession back if they won

    • Germany wanted to keep the US out of Europe

    • Telegraph was intercepted and put in the paper in March and one month and 5 days later we declared war

  • #3 WarHawks

    • Need to help Great Britain

    • Teddy Roosevelt

  • #4 Trade with England increased

    • Trade with Germany decreased as years went on

    • $3 billion in 1916 with England

  • #5 British and American Propaganda

  • #6 Preparedness Program (1915)

    • US started arming and preparing for war

    • Munitions business pushed US into war to make money

  • Eventually, US drew closer to the Allies

    • Why?

  • German sinking of British ships and killing of U.S citizens

    • Lusitania, Arabic, Sussex

    • Lusitania went down in 1914

  • Germany declared unrestricted submarine warfare
