ISIS-

Difference between Sunni and Shia:

Sunni- The tradition in this case refers to practices based on precedent or reports of actions of the Prophet Muhammad

Shia- claimed the right of Ali, the son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad and his descendants to lead the Islamic community

  • 85% of Islam are Sunni

Al Qaeda-

Seeks to rid Muslim countries of what is sees as the profane influence of the West and replace their governments with fundamentals

Why dangerous?

  • They think they are losing their culture
  • Hate Western Countries
  • Will die for their religion
  • Terrorists (from our perspective; not theirs) 

Islam- The 5 Pillars of Islam

  • Shahada (witness)- is the Muslim profession of faith
  • Pray to the East (Mecca- The birthplace of the religion)
  • Samm- Where they fast during the day
  • Make the pilgrimage
  • Give money to the poor (if able) every year

Islamic World- Northern Africa and Eastern Asia

Wednesday-

We took the European map test.

Thursday-

People finished their European map tests. I was gone for everything after that.

Friday-

We finished the Central and South American maps. We listened to the "song" that we will have to sing as a class for a grade.

Ivory Trade

  • Banned June 9, 1989 - restricted countries that were engaged in the trade. Made they had to find different places to find the ivory.
  • Ivory Stockpile - seized by the police and put into a warehouse to stop the trade
    • Burn the ivory to stop the trading - not as wanted
    • since 1989 14 countries have destroyed over 130 tons
    • June 2015- New York destroyed more than 1 ton of ivory

  • Supreme court is to decide the constitutionally of the law
