Monday-
We discussed our Forum leader's topics. Then we started studying the map of Canada - hoping to take next week.
Canadian Head of State- Queen Elizabeth (She has no power at all -> prime minister has more)
ISIS= Islamic State of Iran and Syria
Islam -> Founded by Muhammad, a religion, practices peace
Radical Islam -> Hijacked Islam, buy into a radical
Muslim-> People who practice Islam,
Islamic World = Middle East, Northern Africa, Indonesia
Why would people join Isis?
Not enough money/opportunities -> Join terrorist groups -> Gives them power and a sense of belonging -> Promise wife, car, etc.
How does Isis get money?
Oil, drugs, etc.
We watched a video on why ISIS destroys artifacts. They believe that God told them to destroy them because people used to worship them instead of God. Others believe that they are destroying them because it doesn't line up with their beliefs.
Immigration
Roughly 11 million in the U.S.
Come from everywhere (especially Mexico and Central America)
Should leave:

Send them back and have them do it right
Others say:
Come clean and work towards citizenship within three years time

Tuesday-
We reviewed the map of Canada.
Birthright Citizenship- If you are born in a country, you have automatic citizenship.
Anchor baby- Illegal immigrants have a baby and that pushes them to the front line of becoming a citizen because their child is a citizen
- People think negative of "anchor baby" term -> Dehumanizes the babies
- Candidates shy away from illegal immigration -> Less votes (Hispanics)
The Confederate Flag-
People believe the Confederate Flag is racist
Others believe it is a part of history
Example: Compare to teams that have to change name/mascot because it offends people
Can still fly flag on personal account - not government.

Education in the world
U.S. is average because we try to educate everybody
Other countries just focus people on their career fields
Japan has high suicide rates (18,000 students- Leading cause of death for students in Japan) -> Students are constantly worrying about their education with no time off
September 1st is the worst for suicide because that is when Japan goes back to school -> A lot of pressure to do well in school

Politics

If you win the 11 largest states, you have a good chance of winning the presidential race. (269 votes- You need 270 to win) So if you win those eleven and one more state, you would be president.
Electoral college- The process in which the U.S. chooses the next president and vice-president.

Don't want to waste your time with California if you are Republican or Texas if you are a Democrat
Democrats do well in the cities, and Republicans do well in the countryside. Republicans are more conservative (typically against gay marriage, abortion, etc.)
African Americans, young people, and women typically are democrats because democrats are more lenient with things like abortion, gay marriage, equal rights, and more.
Up until the 1960 election, African Americans mostly voted Republican because Abe Lincoln was Republican.
State rights candidates were the true racist candidates running for state's rights.

Labor Day-
- Celebrate our labor
- Started in late 1800s during the Industrial Revolution
- On September 5th because it filled the long void between the 4th of July and Thanksgiving
- Strike to fight wage cuts -> Led to fights/deaths -> Labor day became a federal holiday
Labor Union- A union of people who protect themselves against the leaders in their labor
Europe's Refugee Crises
Small child (three) washed up on shore because they were trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to get to Europe and away from Syria (Middle East). Some are crushed by stampedes of people, others drowned, and some hit by boats.

When and why did it start? It was founded in 1983 by Bradford Lyttle. Lyttle was a graduate student at the time and he developed a theory called the "Apocalypse Equation" which was basically an explanation on how nuclear weapons can cause catastrophic resulting in an apocalypse. He founded the USPP around this explanation to spread "Scientific Pacifism".
What are their beliefs? They basically reject any military force. Their main platform planks are zero military budge, defense with no violence resistance, and aiding to end all of the world's poverty. They believe that military power contradicts with many religious and philosophic principals. They believe that immigrants would be welcomed and treated for whatever they need using the billions of dollars saved from dropping all military. They are basically all about peace and equality.

Friday-
Tom Brady
Patriots won (blow out). Tom Brady took the air out of the footballs to make the throws easier- Deflate gate. Phone conversations were found. 4 game suspension. The NFL revoked him. The NFL did not give him proper notice of suspension. The case was dismissed because NFL did not follow rules.
All in all- Tom Brady is now back on the field.
Economy
Unemployment rate- People that do not have jobs or do not go seeking for jobs for a long time.
We hit an all time low (good)- 5.1%!!!
President Bush had bailed out all of the banks. He could not let all of these banks die out. It would be the death of the U.S. economy.
Why did the banks go bad? Too many loans... Bad background checks.. Won't pay back so they did not gain interest... NO MONEY
During Great Depression-> 1 in 4 people were unemployed... 25%
Company's hire people-> people spend money -> company gets more money -> hires more people (AND SO ON)
Donald Trump
He is at an all time high for Republican polls - 30%
Officially running as a Republican. Signed a Republican Loyalty Agreement because he is sure that he will be the Republican representative.
