Went through the Chesapeake Bay and up the James River

John Smith was in charge of the settlement

Pocahontas saved John Smiths life

Pocahontas and her friends would take food and other goods to trade with the settlers

In the winter of 1609 - 1610 the settlers completely ran out of food and many settlers started dying

First successful settlement in the Americas

Declaration of Independence

The 13 colonies wanted independence from King George III

Signed by 56 people from the 13 colonies

Some people who signed were John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, and Roger Sherman

States all men are equal

Created a government for the people
