Monday:

Big things that shaped America: Revolutionary War Taxation without representation, colonization Jamestown, civil war states rights and slavery, constitution, Native Americans forcing them off of the land they lived on, Westward Expansion 1800's, Texas War for Independence/Mexican-American war, Reconstruction,

Native Americans were forced westward by the United States, trail of tears, forced and swindled out of their land, we broke promises to the Native Americans, Wiped out their buffalo

Columbus came over to the new world, around Florida and Spain,

Magellan, sailed around the world first,

America Vespucci, America named after him, explorers destroyed Native Americans for gold,

Francis sir Drake, Huge voyage along west side of Americas    

Tuesday:

Exploration was meant for finding gold and returning home

LIne of Demarcation- pope drew line, all land west goes to spain, all land east went to portugal

Lots of people came over from europe to the now United States for freedom of religion

Spain settled 4 major areas in the new world: Modern day Texas, California, Western south america, central america

Potugal settled modern day Brazil

2 Major areas France settled: Canada, central United States, 

England: 2 Major Parts, Eastern new world and Northern Canada

13 Colonies: Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire

The Townshend Acts

The Intolerable Acts

French and Indian War

The Boston Tea Party

The first congregational Congress

The Proclamation of 1763

The Boston Massacre 

The Gatson Flag, Rattlesnake became early symbol for the United States

The Purpose of the Declaration of Independence: meant to declare independence from England

1st paragraph: Great Britain is doing terrible things justifications

2nd paragraph: The things King George has wronged the colonies of

3rd paragraph: Declaring independence

Articles of Confederation: State had more power than the Federal government

Eventually the Articles did not work so the constitution was made

Constitution: Document that sets up our government

The failure of the articles brought out the constitution

Separation of powers: three branches of government, Executive, legislative, Judicial

Checks and Balances: Makes sure there is a balance of power

Legislative: makes Laws

Executive: passes laws

Judicial: decides if the laws are lawful

Father of the Constitution: James Madison

Two houses of congress: House of representatives, Senate 

US Senators: 100

6 year terms for senators have to be 30 years old

Representatives: 435- that number is determined by population

2 year terms for Representatives

Wednesday:

Congress powers: make laws,set taxes, Declare war, Borrow money, Regulate international and national trade, Print money

George Washington was the precedent for serving two terms

Franklin D Roosevelt served the longest presidency, he would have served 12 years and would have served 16 but he died

supreme court justices can be impeached or step down

Current chief Justice is John 

Electoral college- the process in which we elect the president and vice president of the United States

The West in US history why people moved- Gold Rush, Religion, Farming, Cattle Ranching

Manifest Destiny- Idea of god letting us move west

Louisiana Purchase- Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska
