Trail of Tears - Native Americans were forced from the East to the Indian Territory

Declaration of Independence - to declare independence from Great Britain. Giving the rights to rise up from King George lll. Explains how Great Britain is being terrible to us, explains the horrible things that King George lll did to us, then says we declare independence

Constitutional Convention - supposed to change the articles 

U.S Constitution? - document that sets up our government . Came about because of the failure of our articles; to be stronger. 

Separation of Powers? - Establishes rules and separates powers of the government ; judicial, executive, legislative 

Checks and Balances? - Balance of power so that no branch overrides another

two houses of Congress - House of representatives, senate 

There are 100 Senators in the U.S. 2 per state.

Wednesday - 

2 year terms for the house of representatives and you have to be 25 years old 

Congress can make laws and declare war 

December 8 1941 was the last time the U.S declared war- Pearl Harbor

You must be 35 years old to be president 

Franklin Roosevelt served the longest time - 12 years 

The longest mound of time a president can serve is 10 years

Texas War for Independence : colonists in the Mexican province of Texas rebelled against the Mexican government

Causes - Bad blood between Texas and Mexico (Land) 

President Polk sent troops to the border. Mexico thinks we have invaded so they attack. U.S wins. 

Main causes of the Civil War:

1. Sectionalism - North and south 

2. Slavery 

3. States Rights 

4. Tariffs 

5. Election of 1860 & Secession - secession is leaving, several states secede and war breaks out 

Every time a new state wanted to come in, it was a problem 

Missouri wanted to come in as a slave state. The north was concerned. They broke Maine off Massachusetts and drew the Missouri compromise line. North free. South slaves.

Dread Scott- African American given freedom. U.S Supreme Court said that blacks were not citizens. Said that government could not abolish slavery. Suddenly, slavery could be open anywhere 

The confederate states considered themselves as their own country 

The south is doing better than the north at first 

The north won the Civil War, though, because they had more resources (Population, Railroads, Factories) 

Friday -

Reconstruction - rebuilding of the South after the Civil War

Republican Radical Reconstruction- Rebuilt south economically, socially, politically and physically

- Split the south into five military districts

- 13, 14, 15 amendments passed (slavery now unconstitutional, can't take rights away, allowed all men to vote no matter color)

1920 - when women got the right to vote

Freedmen Bureau - Provided food, clothing, education, and job training to freed slaves

Carpetbaggers - Northern, white republicans who moved south after the war. Many became rich businessmen or won political office

Scalawags - Southern, white republicans Southerners believed these people were betraying the South

These governments set up schools, raised taxes, built railroads, helped ex-slaves, industrialized the South

Governments were accused of widespread corruption by southerners

African-Americans would not see the rights they should have had in 1865 until 1964

Election of 1876 -Rutherford B. Hayes vs. Samuel J. Tilden

Tilden won the popular vote but Hayes won the election

Hayes removed federal troops from the south ending Reconstruction
