Neutrality in Gerneal- we wanted to be Isolationism so we passed laws to stay out of wars
America first committee- they wanted to keep the US out of the war in Europe
Neutrality Acts-1935- stop trading with countries at war....1936-stop loaning money to countries at war....1937-Cash and carry system-weapons not included, allow Britian to come and buy supplies with cash in their own ships and go back on their own ships....1939-Cash and carry system-weapons included. same thing as 1937 just weapons included.
Bases for Destroyers- passed in September, 1940 between the US and Great Britian, Fifty US destroyers were given to Great Britian in exchange for land rights(for 99 years) on British colonies for naval or air base purposes.
End of US Neutrality- Lend Lease Act- the end of neutrality for the US came with the Lend-Lease Act, passed in March, 1941, This act allowed the US to sell, lend or give war materials to nations the US wanted to support, US gave $50 billion dollars to countries, we gave them tanks, airplanes, food products, industrial materials
We gave things to Great Britain, Russia, China, South America, Africa
Selective Training and Service Act-Passed in September, 1940 and ended in 1947, required that men between the ages of 21 and 35 register for teh draft, extended to all men aged 18 to 45 once US entered war, first peacetime draft in US history.

German U-Boats-After repeated attacks by German U-boats on US ships in the fall of 1941, FDR announced that he had ordered the US Navy to attack German and Italian war ships in the "waters which we deem necessary for our defense" War was Imminent!
Ways to fight back against the German U-Boats,Convoy System-travel in groups so germany can't take out all the supply ships. Depth Charge- huge explosive that you would program and make it go certain depths to sink U-boats- they were 7% successful. Hedgehogs- groups of bombs that sunk ships
Allied Intelligence-RADAR, High Frrequency Radio Direction Finding, Sonar, huff duff, Allied intelligence began sharing code-breaking secrets known as "ULTRA" and "MAGIC"
Yalta Conference- waht was going to happen to Germany after the war, Feb.1945 in Yalta, Russia. 1. United Nations would be set up, 2. Germany to be divided into four zones, 3. Free elections allwed in the states of Eastern Europe, 4.USSR promised to join the war against Japan.

Native americans-Navajo Code Talkers, we used Navajo language to transmit information, and the Axis powers could not figure out the code.

African Americans in WWII-they were segregated,At first they were cooks, mechanics. Tuskegee Institute/Airmen- they were the best airmen in WWII for the US.
Asian Americans in WWII- they would fight in the war, they were segregated, but still did what every white person did.
HollyWood in WWII- there were news reels that played before the movie that educated people about what is going on. They had lots of propaganda, they would make the enemy look like they are idiots.
Bob Hope and the USO(United Service Organizations) Tour- this tour would have singers and actors and comidians touring around and entertaining the soldiers.
Kilroy Engraving on the WWII Memorial in DC- the picture would always be engraved where the US went.
OPA and Rationing- the office of Price Administration was established in 1941 to control prices of goods, food rationing included restrictions on sugar and meat; clothing rationing restrictioned silk and nylon, Gas rationing began, Gas rationing was about saving rubber, not, gas. Black markets developed selling gas and food and things. You were given different stickers for your job, and that determined how much gas you could get.
War Production Board- you should work as hard as you can each day, do everything right and efficiet.
War Finance Committee and War Bonds-Over the course of the war 85 million Americans purchased bonds totaling approximately 185 billion, helped pay for the war, it was an investment for US citizen, if you bought $18.75 ten years later gov't paid out $25.
Japanese Internment Camps- we would force the Japanese-Americans out of their houses, and to sell all their things. We would ship them to this camp to work, the kids went to school, Males did male jobs, Women did womenly jobs.
Causes of WWII- In Europe- Treaty of Versallies, Great Depression, Hitler's actions in the 1930's, Mussolini's actions in the 1930's, Failure of the League of Nations, Policy of Appeasement, Hitler's invasion of Poland, Rise of nationalism....In Asia- Great Depression, Japanese incasion of Manchuria in 1931, and China in1937..In US- Quit trading supplies(oil) with Japan in the summer of 1941, tough polocies toward Japan in Fall of 1941
Effects of WWII on US- Stimulated the economy, 17 million new jobs created, average wafes increased 30%, Middle class greatly expanded, Federal power during the war increased, shifted from state laws to federal laws- important during civil rights era and Vietnam war, more women in the workforce, African Americans had more rights, and were integraded into the military, Germany was split into to countries, Japanese cities were destroyed from bombing and Japan was placed under US military rule, Most deaths ever in a war, United Nations starts, Cold War- US vs USSR.
