Cold War

communism vs democracy 

democracy- people have power we vote for our leaders

communism- government is in control

socialism vs capitalism

socialism- government controls

capitalism- we own businesses

Causes of the cold war- different political systems, The Red Scare- We feared communism, Both thought their country was right and Stalin hated capitalism, Stalin lied about allowing free election s at the Yalta Conference, We feared a communists attack, and USSR feared the atomic bombs.

US goals- stop spread of communism, promote democracy.

USSR goals- Wanted greater security, spread communism

Iron Curtain Speech- Winston Churchill's address discussing the soviets occupation of eastern Europe and their desire to expand.

Domino Theory- Once a communist wins means a lot of other people will fall into communism too.

Policy of Containment 1947- A US policy created to stop the spread of communism

Truman Doctrine- America will help any country that is threatened by communism, we gave them money and military guns and such

Marshall Plan- US paying to help Europe economy after WWII

Brinkmanship- Letting a situation to become extremely dangerous in order to get results. 

Massive Retaliation- A strategy of military counter attack that involves the use of nuclear weapons.

Mutual Deterrence- It prevents both of us from using nuclear weapons

Mutual Assured Destruction- never use nuclear weapons

North Atlantic Treaty Organization- Organization of 12 countries for non aggression

Warsaw Pact- military treaty of European countries, Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia and soviet union

CIA(Central Intelligence agency)- an agency that investigates and gathers security through human intelligence.

KGB- The Soviet Union, they would spy on other countries

Peaceful Coexistence- Living together in peace rather than in constant fear

De-Stalinization- Disregarding the influence of Joseph Stalin in WWII

Detente- The easement of tension between two sides in either a negotiation or agreement.

Perestroika- Restructuring the Soviet Union government, more democracy, and free elections

Glasnost- A policy for opening and discussion of economic and political relations.

Nuclear Test Ban Treaty- Great Britain, Soviet Union, US signed a treaty about not signing a treaty to stop testings nuclear weapons. 

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty- To stop the spread of nuclear weapons but it could be used for energy

Strategic Arms Limitations Talks- US and USSR agreed to restrain the arms race in strategic missiles

Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban treaty- A treaty to ban nuclear testing underground

Missile Defense System- Type of defense to block incoming missiles.
