Week of April 3rd-7th

Monday: Finished filling out Canada Maps, went over current events and went over powerpoint more.

9-11 and the U.S War on Terror

  • 1.3 million lives have been lost as of March 2015 as a result of the U.S. War on Terror

  • Al Qaeda started in 1980

  • Taliban allowed Al Qaeda to train in Afghanistan

  • We invade Afghanistan because Al Qaeda started there

  • We invade Iraq because believe that Saddam Hussein had access to nuclear weapons

  • Republicans-

    • Most everyone supported the war in afghanistan due to 9-11

    • Afghanistan was not focused on as much after the Iraq invasion in 2003

    • Allowed Taliban and al qaeda to gain in power over the years

    • Trump has started he might send more U.S. troops to stop the increased violence

  • Democrats-

    • Obama wanted to focus more on Afghanistan instead of Iraq war- sent 30,000 more troops in December 2009

    • Started U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in July 2011

    • Hopes to be out of Afghanistan sometime in 2017 as of 10/15/15

 

Tuesday: Practiced Canada map, talked about current events, and went over power point

War in Iraq-

  • Background:

    • Iraq invaded Kuwait

    • Hussein gassed people in Iraq

    • We flew over no fly zones everyday to make sure they were following rules

    • Weapon inspectors were called in to find nuclear weapons

  • Democrats:

    • Many favored Iraq War at first but criticized President Bush for messing it up

    • Wanted a defined exit strategy during the Bush years

    • Bush kept saying we aren’t leaving Iraq until the job is done

    • Obama withdrew all combat troops from Iraq in August 2010

    • All U.S. forces were out of Iraq at the end of 2011

  • Did we leave to soon? ISIS took over

  • Republicans:

    • Bush started the war in 2003

    • Bush stated 8-21-06 that us wouldn't leave until the job is done- not leaving until we feel that they can protect themselves

    • Admitted to mistakes in Iraq and said it will be a tough fight

    • In 2007, Bush increased troop levels in Iraq- Known as “the Surge”

    • Hoped Iraq's new government and people would be stable enough for U.S withdrawal

    • Bush pulled 8000 troops by end of 2008 and beginning of 2009



Wednesday: We took the class quiz over northern Canada and talked about current events, then we went on with the power point

Current Events:

  • Nivea released an offensive, racist ad- white is purity

  • Kendall Jenner Pepsi commercial said to be using black lives matter protest to get views

War on Iraq:

  • What made the war in Iraq so unpopular?

    • We never found WMD’s which is why Bush said we had to go to war in Iraq

    • Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal

    • The Surge- most Americans wanted to get out of the country

    • Democrats wanted a defined exit strategy and Bush didn’t have one

 

Thursday: We went over Canada map more, and talked about current events, then we continued with the power point.

ISIS:

  • Stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria

  • After the U.S. left Iraq in 2011, ISIS, formerly al-Qaeda in Iraq moved in and has taken over much of northern Iraq and Syria

  • Obama started a bombing campaign on ISIS targets in August 2014

  • Obama sent 1500 military advisors back in late 2014

  • Former Defense secretary Leon Panetta has criticized Obama for leaving Iraq too early

  • 75% of ISIS troops have been killed by U.S airstrikes as of 12/14/16

  • Trump’s Plan:

    • Airstrikes in Mosul

 

Friday: We took the class quiz over provinces and capitals of Canada, talked about current events and then read two articles about ISIS
