Massive Retaliation- one country strikes then the other country will fire back

NATO= North Atlantic Treaty Organization- it was desiged to protect us against Russia, if Russia attacks all the countries in NATO will help out with the fight. First Peacetime alliance in US. Canada Western Europe and the US were apart of it.

Warsaw Pact- enemies, Alliance between the Soviet Union and the Eastern countries. NATO has now expanded there are not many "friendly governments around them". Warsaw Pact is no longer

CIA vs KGB- CIA spies/ collects intellegence on other countries. KGB-was the US equivilent of CIA and FBI combined.

Stalin Died in 1953

Peaceful Co-existence- we can get along but we don't have to love each other.

De-Stalinization- all the statues and pictures of Stalin were taken down.

Detente 1970- Nixon went to China and Russia. He made our relations better with China. Being peaceful with countries.

Mikhail Gorbachev- came to power in USSR in 1985- he gave people some freedoms, he was open to change.

Perestroika- restructuring of the economy, make it more democratic and free electioons, Glasnot- more openness of the Soviet government and for it's people, free speech and press.

Wednesday-

 USSR's First Atomic Test 1949

Nuclear Powers of the World- US, France, China, UK, Russia, India, Pakistan, North korea, Israel, Iran

North Korea's last nuclear test was in 2017, Kim Jong Un said he will no longer test nuclear weapons and will shut down missile sites.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action- "Iran reaffirms that under no circumstances will (it) ever seek, develop or acquire nuclear weapons." In exchange, the country will get relief from economic sanctions and permission to continue its atomic program for peaceful purposes.

Nuclear Test Ban Treaty 1963

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty 1970- "Prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology" " Promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy" "Further the gial of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament.

Anti-Ballistic Missile 1972- US/USSR- limited weapons that would seek out and destroy nuclear weapons once launched, In the 8-'s President Reagan announced the Strategic Defense Initiative. US withdraws in 2002 under George W. Bush, Withdrew due to missile defense sytem.

Salt 1 1972- froze the number of strategic ballistic missile launchers at existing levels. Limited new submarine-launched ballistic missile.

Thursday-

 Comprehensive Nulear Test ban treaty- this treaty banned all nuclear testing, congress did not sign it.

International Atomic Energy Agency 1957- watchdog of nuclear weapons, United Nations organization. Makes sure countries are following the rules.

INF Treaty- It was reducing the amount of nuclear weapons out in the world

START Treaty- largest and most complex arms control treaty, removal of about 80% of all strategic nuclear weapons in existence, START I treaty expired in 2009

SORT- Reduce the deloye and reserve nuclear weapons was to be cut in half.

New START 2011- reduce the number of weapon launcher. Reduced in half.

United Nations- started after WWII in replaced the league of nations, it has a military force unlike the league of the nations, the US joined this one.
