Monday: Took the class quiz over Southeastern United States then started presentations

Issues with driving:

  • Drunk driving: operation of a motor vehicle while one’s blood alcohol content is above the legal limit set by state

  • DUI: driving under the influence

  • 50%-75% of convicted drunk drivers drive on suspended license

  • Strong Coffee or cold shower doesn’t sober you up

  • 2 out of 3 people will be involved in drunk driving crash

  • DUI

    • Either be strictly alcohol

      • Must be first offence

      • BAC can’t be over the legal limit of 0.08%

    • Driving under the influence of intoxicating drug

    • In some states DUI is a lesser form of DWI

    • 15 states allow you operation with a small amount of certain drugs in your system

    • Around 10 million people drive under the influence of drugs

    • Around 1 in 5 injured drivers test positive for drugs

    • Most drivers range for age 18-25

  • DWI

    • Driving while intoxicated or driving while impaired

    • First-offence is a misdemeanor in all states

    • Punishable by up to 6 months in jail

    • Most states requires minimum jail time of DWI crimes

    • Open bottles and property damage can lead to more jail time

    • Fines can range from $500-$2000

  • Iowa Laws

    • Illegal to drive under the influence- drugs and alcohol

    • Known as OWI in Iowa- operating while under the influence

    • If Bac is 0.08% or more you will be arrested

      • Under the Age of 21 is 0.02%

    • You must submit to a blood, breath, or urine test

  • Alternatives

    • Designated driver

    • Use a taxicab if available

    • Public transportation

Tuesday: Talked about current events, went over the US map, and continued with presentations.

Issues with driving:

  • Texting

  • Using phones or electronics while driving

  • 1 in 4 car accidents are because of texting and driving

  • 17 teens drive every day in a car crash from being on their phones

  • In Iowa, first offence is $30

  • Teens are 300% more likely to crash because of distractions than middle age people

Wednesday: Went over the U.S. map and took the Northeast class quiz, then my group presented our power point on Poaching in Africa.

Thursday: We took the U.S. map test and got our Africa maps.

Friday: Talked about the current events and continue on with Presentations

School Shootings and Mental Illness:

  • 201 shootings in public schools

  • Schools are the second most common place for shooting

  • 1 school shooting a month

  • 2016 Study

    • 34 adolescent mass murderers

    • 33.5% were victims of bullying

    • 1.4% of students had a mental illness out of 34 adolescent mass murders

    • 23% had a documented mental history of any kind

  • Bath School Disaster

    • 1927

    • One of the first times a school shooting happened

    • 45 victims

    • Most victims were kids

    • Bombs were involved

  • Sandy Hook Elementary

    • 2012

    • 28 victims

    • 20 kids

    • 6 teachers

    • Gunman killed himself and his mom

  • Columbine

    • 1999

    • 15 victims

  • How it happens

    • Open Guns- 1.7 million children live with unlocked loaded guns

Mental Illness

  • Disorder with brain function

  • Mixed feelings and emotions

    • Child or adult feels lonely or useless and losing hope- can have thoughts of death, change in habits

    • Losing focus

    • 350 million people suffer from depression

    • Women are more likely to suffer from depression than men

  • Eating Disorder

    • Anorexia

    • Thinks they are overweight and will stop eating or eating smaller quantities

  • Anxiety

    • Reaction of stressful situations

    • People get nervous or stressed or over thinking about things
