Discussed the Group Project. Project Number-5 Amendments, laws, assassinations, and scandals

The Cold War 1945-1990 US vs Union of Soviet Socialist Republics 

a political, stategic and ideological struggle between the US and Soviet Union from 1945-1990. Spread throughout the world.

Tuesday-

 Project Work Day

Wednesday-

 Soviet Union- Bolshevik Revolution-Lenin, Stalin- Purges, Collectivization, Nationalization, Five Year Plans, Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact, War with Germany, Battle of Berlin April-May, 1945. Lenin died in 1924.

Causes of the Cold War-

Different political system-US promoted freedom and hard work, USSR promoted Communism, and dictatorship

The Red Scare 1919

They both thought that their system was the better and distrusted the others intentions

Distrust during WWII

Stalin despised capitalism

Stalin Broke his promise to allow free elections at the Yalta Conference

American fear of a communist attack and USSR's fear of a US attack

USSR's fear of the atomic bomb

USSR's actions in their German zone

USSR's goal was to spread Communism around the world

Yalta Confernece- this was the confernece that desided what was going to happen to Gemany

1. Establishment of the Untied Nations

2. Germany to be divided into four zones

3. Free elecions allowed in the states of eastern Europe

4. Russia promised to join the war against Japan

Thursday-

 Post WWII- wanted to promote open markets for US goods to prevent another depression, promote democracy thorughout the world, stop the spread of communism

Goals for USSR-

wanted to create greater security for itself, feared a strong Germany, Establish defensible borders, encouraged friendly governments on its borders

Truman Doctrine- 1947 British were helping the Greek government fight against communists, We sent money and weapons to help them out, but we didn't fight or send our troops.

Marshall Plan- 1947 was when the plan was announced, a bunch of money that was sent to Europe so it can recover from WWII, and we didn't want communism to spread.

Brinkmanship- 50's to 60's- we have to go to the brink of war, but not actually go to war
