Wednesday- Germany was split into two countries. Stalin wanted all of Berlin. A blockade is a sign of war. Work Day.
Thursday- Began song presentations.
Bay of pigs: Cuba was communist, the government wants to take out Castro and stop communism there. Cuban exiles: Cubans that didn't like Castro. CIA trained Cuban exiles to go in and try to over through Cuban government. Called bay of pigs because of Spanish name. What was it? What were the results? How did it hurt Pres Kennedy? Didn't over throw Castro. Didn't go well at all. All died or was captured. Air support was supposed to happen and it didn't.
Berlin Wall- 1961. Stalin wanted all of Berlin to himself. East Berlin is commie and west Berlin is democratic. Didn't want the wall built because it would make them look bad but had to in order to keep people. If people tried to leave they would be killed. Came down in 1989.
Red Scare: 1947-1957. Causes, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg Trial. High tension. Iron Curtain. USSR detonating their atomic bomb. China becoming commie. Korean War starting. Stalin's actions in Germany.
Friday- Continue presentations
Red scare: McCarthy and HUAC. Alien Registration Act of 1940. Made it illegal to advocate the overthrow of the US. Required all non citizen adult residents to register with the government. Approximately 215 people were indicted under the legislation, including alleged communists, Anarchists, and fascists. Prosecutions under the Smith act continued until it was consider unconstitutional. Joseph McCarthy was a republican senator from Wisconsin. In 1950, he gave a speech where he claimed to have a list of 205 Communists in the State Department. No one in the press actually saw the names on the list. HUAC tried to find communism in Hollywood.
Cuban Missile Crisis: October 1962. 13 day crisis. The compromise- The soviets would remove their missiles from Cuba. The US would promise never to invade Cuba. The US would secretly remove our nuclear missiles from Turkey within six months.
