Tuesday- Yalta Conference Feb. 1945: before the end of the World War II, Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt met at Yalta USSR to plan what should happen when the war ended. They agreed on the following: the establishment of the United Nations, Germany to be divided into four zones and ruled by the main powers, free elections allowed in the states of eastern Europe (Stalin did allow free elections and later Germany was split into two worlds), USSR promised to join the war against Japan (August 8th/9th). Wednesday- Hollywood in WWII: educating people the news reals and propaganda use. There were a lot of movies made during WWII that made movies over the war ex. Wake Island, Casablanca. Bob Hope and the USO (united service organization) Tour- they went to entertain the troops with pin up girls, music acts, putting on shows by acting, or other acts. Bing Crosby and john Wayne were other acts that entertained the troops. Kilroy engraving on the WWII memorial in DC- Stalin and Hitler thought Kilroy was a secret spy or something. The guys name might have been James Kilroy and he worked in the ships for a shipping company. They believe he drew this and when others saw it they kept drawing and passing it on. Cartoons-. OPA and Rationing- the office of price administration was established in 1941 to control prices of goods, food rationing included restrictions on sugar and meat, clothing rationing restricted silk and nylon. Gasoline rationing began in May 1942- about 5 gallons per week, they did this because we were low on rubber and that is what they needed. gas rationing was about saving rubber, not gas. A black market developed in stolen/counterfeit stickers that were used in up to 30% of gasoline sales. By 1945 there were 32,500 motorists arrested for using such false stickers, 1300 convictions, 4000 gas stations closed. B sticker- was issued primarily to business owners and they got 8 gallons per week. The A sticker- was the most common of the WWII gas ration stickers, issued to the general public, 3 gallons of gasoline per week. C sticker- Official gov. or red cross workers, school official traveling school to school, transportation 4 or more to school , united states mail, wholesale newspaper delivery, etc. M Sticker is for Air raid warden messenger, western union messenger. T sticker- truck drivers issued to truck drivers and unlimited gas. X sticker was issued in special instances for high mileage type jobs such as travelling salesman. People standing in line for sugar. Canned fruits, vegetables, and soups are rationed. Horse meat is the only meat that wasn't rationed. War production Board- encouraging people to make as much as they could. War finance committee and war bonds- over the course of the war 85 million Americans purchased bonds totaling approximately 185 billion. helped pay for the war, it was an investment for US citizens, as low as 18.75 per bond, Ten years later Gov't paid out $25. What did war finance do- they helped by pushing to sell war bonds and help pay for the war. Japanese internment camps-
