German U-Boats
-After repeated attacks by German U-boats on U.S. ships in the Fall of 1941, FDR announced that he had ordered the US Navy to attack German and Italian war ships in the "Waters which we deem necessary for our defense"- War was imminent!
1943 our production was doing very well. A lot fewer US ships were being sank radar and sonar and ultra and braking their codes.
Convoy System- Put ships with goods with them in the middle and surround yourself with war ships.
Hunter- Killer Convoy Groups
-Hunter- Killer groups would typically be formed around an escort aircraft carrier that would provide aerial reconnaissance and air cover for the convoy group.
War ships-Corvette, Destroyers, Destroyers Escorts, Frigates. US coast Guard Cutters armed with depth chargers and Hedgehog anti-submarine mortar.
Depth Charge- Forced underwater then it will be triggered to explode trying to sink submarines.
Allied Intelligece
-Churchill and Roosevelt knew the importance of intelligence in safeguarding Allied commerce to defeat the Axis powers. The allies shared information from RADAR and High Frequency Radio Direction Finding. RADAR provided a means of detecting vessels and aircraft above the surface. HF/DF was used to locate the sources of enemy radio transmissions such as submarines. Allied intelligence leaders began sharing code--breaking secrets, known as "very special intelligence" and classified under cover- names like "ULTRA" and MAGIC.
Enigma- Used to transfer information by code. System that the German used to transfer their information through codes. Solving the Enigma system remains one of the great Allied triumphs of WWII.
Blimps- D-Day tangle up the planes by hanging down wires.
D-Day Facts- Day of Days. since the final invasion date as unknown and weather dependent. 156,000 Allied troops from the US, the United kingdom, Canada, Free France and Norway. The allied coed names for the beaches along the 50-mile stretch of Normandy coast targeted for landing.
Germany and the United States had the most casualties.
By June 11, with the beachheads firmly secured. More than 326,00 troops had crossed with more than 100,000 tons of military equipment. Pairs was liberated on August 25. Germany surrendered on may 8 1945.
Major battle of the Bulge- About a million men were involved. 81,000 American casualties, including 23,554 captured and 19,000 killed. the coldest, snowiest weather "in memory" in the Ardennes forest on the German/ Belgium border. 500,000 Germans and 600,000 Americans. The battle of the Bulge was the worst battle- in terms of losses to the American Forces in WWII.
Tuesday-
Women in the 1950's Poodle skirts, blouses, headbands, black and white socks, they got the greaser looks.
Working in factory's and nursing, waitresses, teaches, farmers. WAK 239 jobs for women in the Army.
Waves- Women's Navy secretary and radio people on the ships.
"Tokyo Rose"- Forces to broadcast propaganda to the Allied troops for Japan. In these radio programs, she taunted the troops and played music from home. She was a US citizen in Japan. Convicted of treason. She is trying to put doubt in your mind make you depressed and make you want to go home.
Women would start going to college they were graduating more than the men.
Navajo Code Talkers- We had their playbook but they didn't have ours. Capturing Navajo code talker. Don't let them get captured so they would shoot them.
Tuskegee- they fought hard to get to fly they did small jobs like cleaning it was a racist thing they said they didn't think they were smart enough to carry out the bombing campaigns. But eventually they were aloud to fly and they won a lot of metals and successful bombings.
Wednesday-
Hollywood- Entertaining the troops and propagandizing people they make the Germans and Japanese look evil or stupid.
The movies weren't designed to teach history but it will teach you some things.
Bob Hope- Comedian. Most well known for his USO United Service Organizations to entertain the troops. John Wayne.

OPA and Rationing- The office of price Administration was established in 1941 to control prices of goods. Food rationing included restrictions on sugars and meat; clothing rationing restricted silk and nylon. Gasoline rationing began in May 1942- five gallons per week. We just wanted to get the rubber from the tires. A black market developed in stolen/ counterfeit stickers that were used in up to 30% of gasoline sales. By 1945, there were 32,500 motorists arrested for using such false stickers, 1300 convictions, 400 gas stations closed. '
The A sticker was the most common of the WWII gas ration stickers. Issued to the general public. 3 gallons of gasoline per week. B sticker was business 8 gallons per week. x sticker was issued in special instances for high mileage type job such as traveling salesman.
