Week of 9/7-9/11

Tuesday:

When Lincoln was elected in 1860, the south was concerned that Lincoln would abolish slavery. The south seceded from the union to keep slavery. 

The North's goal was to keep the union together. 

North

More people.

Better railroads

Better Navy

More food

Stable government

South

Knew the terrain more

More familiar with weapons

Good reason to fight

Better generals

Over 600,000 people died. 

General Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox court house.

Reconstruction - period of time after the Civil War in which the South had to be rebuilt and reorganized into the Union. Presidents Lincoln and Johnson wanted to be easy on the South. 

Rebuilt south:

Economically - industrialized the south

Socially - brought families back together 

Politically - Got the white, racist democrats out of office

Physically - rebuilt cities

13th - abolished slavery

14th - made US citizens and laws were equal

15th - gave black males the right to vote

Freedmen's Bureau was set up to help former slaves gain skills

When Northern military and governments left the south, racist democrats took over again.

African-Americans would not see the rights they should have had in 1865 until 1964

Wednesday/Thursday - Took test over above knowledge

Friday - Watched a video on 9/11
