Ch. 6.2:
-What impact did railroads have on the US?- connected cities, tows, and settlements. Made easier trade and more independence. Transcontinental Railroad. Went from Omaha to Sacramento California. Could travel any were in the US. Time zones were created.
-Why were many people upset with the railroads? The farmers thought they were over priced.
-What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads?- Farmers were mad at the railroad companies. Granger Laws. The railroads mistreated the farmers so a law was to help the farmers. it made the price to ship things on the railroad.(State laws) Interstate commerce act- made good prices to ride trains. The Panic and Consolidation. Business were ruined and closed. left 4 million people out of a job
Ch. 6.3:
-Tell me about Andrew Carnegie.- Born in Scotland moved to the US in 1848 at age 13 years old. And started working at 13. At 17 he started working for the railroads, then quit and then Monopolized the steel industry. Owned the railroads that traveled his steel and all the resources for the steel. Sherman Anti Trust Act- was made in 1890 prevent monopoly.
-Tell me about John D. Rockefeller.-
-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business?- stating that the weaker die while the stronger survive.
-Explain how companies formed monopolies(vertical/horizontal integration, trusts). -Horizontal owned all the same business and vertical was own all everything
-How did the government try to regulate business?-
-What are labor unions and what is their purpose? organized everyone regardless of skill, more and leverage ,bargaining & strike situations. Union Movement diverge- created to protect workers, spread and split into 2 factions. Craft unionism/industrial unionism , Craft- breaking down into smaller groups. Strikes because 10% wage cut 3rd time in the month. The president sent in men to stop the strikes.
Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals? Explain/Give examples-
Labor Unions- long hours little pay bad conditions children worked, people came together to better things.
The American Federation of Labor-Average wages rose, and unionized industries
Collective Bargaining-Gomper as its president, focused on collective bargaining or negotiation. Collective Bargaining- as a group would ask the boss and work out a deal for better hours and pay.
Tuesday- review for test! test Tomorrow!!
Wednesday- Groups 1 &2 tested while others watched a film about Andrew Carnegie or studied for the test.
Thursday- Test day! Watched a video.
Friday- Test day. Watched the video
