Manifest Destiny- U.S. citizens felt as if it was their god given right to take all the land as far west as they could go
Why did settlers/ people move to the great plains/west? Farming( cattle ranching, agriculture, sheep-herding) The Homestead Act, in which you could apply for 160 acres of land if they had never taken up arms against the U.S. They also moved out west for Silver and Gold Mining in the Gold Rush of 1849. Working on the Railroad was also a good reason for why settlers came over. Many people also came west because of hunting. There were also people who came over for adventure, and some were known as mountain men. People also came over to work for the U.S. Military, but most people who did worked as calvary, because it was a good way to combat the Native Americans.
Describe a Cowboys life?
People Fondly look back at this time, which would be considered the Cattle Ranching and Cowboys era. 1867-1880
Their Life was lonely and dangerous because there were natives who hated you, animals to attack you, and you were with little to no one, so if you got hurt real bad, you would quite possibly die.
25% of Cowboys were former slaves
Lots of Promiscouis things happened, such as drinking gambling, fights, prostitution, and gunfights/duels where people took the law into their own hands
You would spend a lot of your time driving cattle north which would put you at risk of a stampede
Describe the Importance of the Native Americans and how the buffalo were destroyed
How did the US gov't deal with Native Americans in the mid to late 1800's? What were their policies?
