Monday and Tuesday- classtime to work on presentation

Wednesday- Started presentations- my group presented first

Presentation notes:

Christopher Columbus-

  • Italian Explorer- exploring for Spanish
  • made 4 voyages 1492-1502
  • "Sailed the Ocean Blue in 1492"
  • Santa Maria, Nina, Pinta
  • Thought he was finding a water route to Asia
  • found new trade routes
  • new goods for Europe- expanded Columbia Exchange
  • brought diseases that wiped out a lot of Native Americans
  • Slave trade- forced Natives to labor
  • didn't discover North America, discovered area around Caribbean Islands
  • Exchange culture

Signing of the Constitution

  • Signed in September 17, 1787
  • Replaced the Articles of Confederation, which gave ALL of the power to the states, little to no central power
  • States were uninited, like 13 seperate countries, didn't get along.
  • 27 Constitutional Amendments- first 10 are Bill of Rights
  • Tree branches of Government- Executive, Legislative, Judicial- seperation of power
  • Written to unite America and help them work together better

The War of 1812

  • June 1812-February 1815
  • US vs. British
  • Blocked Trade
  • No definite winner, stalemate
  • American forces capture York
  • British invaded DC and burned down the White House
  • 2 centries of peace afterwards
  • Boosted manufacturing capabilities
  • Star-Spangled Banner was written during this war
  • Ties up loose ends from Revolutionary War
  • Solidified Independance
  • Boosted national confidence

Natives Crossing Land Bridge

  • 12,000 BC
  • End of last Ice Age
  • Sea levels dropped 300 ft across the world
  • Water freezing, allowing native Asians to cross over to North America

Settling Jamestown

  • Settled on May 14, 1607
  • First successful permanent European settlement in the New World
  • John Rolfe, a colonist, married Pocahontas, helped with trade and peace
  • Started very long feud with Native Americans
  • John Smith- leader of Jamestown
  • Pocahontas- John Smith was captured by Chief Powhatan- Pocahontas saved his life
  • Starving time- Winter 1609-10

Civil War

  • 1861-1865
  • Union wanted equal rights, Confederate wanted slavery
  • Deadliest, bloodiest war in US history
  • 620,000 deaths, millions injured- more casualties than both World Wars combined
  • Abraham Lincoln- President of the Union at the time, commander in chief of Union Army, wrote Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and the Gettysburg Address
  • Ulysses S. Grant- main general of Union- later became president
  • Jefferson Davis- president of the Confederacy
  • Robert E. Lee- general of Confederate army
  • Battle of Sumpter- April 12-
