Policy of Containment- Policy to prevent the spread of communism abroad
Truman Doctrine: A United States policy to stop Soviet expansion during the Cold War. (dealt with Greece and Turkey) In order to stop the spread of Communism we would fund and support countries to keep them from falling under communist influence. we would supply any country who asked for it.
Marshall Plan: America helped rebuild Europe and Asia after WWII. We did it because we wanted to stop the spread of communism, we thought that another economic crash will happen so we funded Europe and Asia, resumed trade, and the economy was fine.
Brinkmanship: have to be willing to go to war without doing it entirely “we’re on the brink of war”
Mutual Assured Destruction: (MAD) Nuclear war can’t happen because if one country attacks, the defender will fight back and both countries will be destroyed because of the mass destruction of the bombs.
Massive Retaliation- they shoot us, we’re gonna shoot back
Mutual Deterrence- because of Massive retaliation, we don’t shoot, because we know it’s a death wish.
NATO: Organization formed by the US for 12 Nations- an agreement between membered areas, mainly in North America and Europe, that provide a collective defenses from outside attackers.
Detente: Countries negotiating to reduce tension and keep peace
Warsaw Pact- It was the communist counteraction to the NATO. it was seen as a potential militaristic threat and was a show of communistic dominance in Eastern Europe. The pact grew to become a way to strengthen military powers of the countries
