Monday- Domestic policy

  • Imperialism- stronger countries taking over weaker parts of land.
  • Diplomacy- Before a war and leaders go and talk to see if they can talk it out
  • Militarism- Use your military for power.
  • Nationalism- Proud of your country
  • Protectorate- When a country has a different country protect them.
  • Arbitration- When someone comes in and then he will listen to each sides and he will make the decision.

Old Diplomacy-

  • 1. Non Interventionist
  • The Us did not intervene in foreign affairs, especially Eourpes.
  • 2. Isolationist
  • Us Acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with others nations
  • 3. Passive and reactive
  • US waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly.
  • 4. weak Army and Navy

New Diplomacy

  • Going out and conquering territory to create an empire
  • Stronger army and navy
  • Interventionist
  • becoming more involved in other countries affairs.
  • Monroe Doctrine
  • Having strong pride and confidence in ones country

Tuesday-

  • The western frontier was settled in 1890
  • Brings military power and prestige to our country.
  • Naval bases and refueling stations
  • Money for natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods.
  • Belief in cultural superiority- White man's Burden.
  • To take care and educate the filipinos
  • By 1900, spain was a dwindling empire
  • Us tried to buy cuba in 1854
  • Cubans had been revolting against Spain frequently wanting independence.
  • Many felt sorry for the cuban people.

  • The USS Maine sinking

  • Butcher Weyler and his treatment of Cubans in the Concentration

  • Jose Marti's destruction of US property in Cuba-making it look as though Spain did it

Wednesday-  

  • The Yellow Press
  • - They were the instigators
  • On April 25, 1898 the United States declared war on spain
  • Discuss imperialist and anti-imperialists in Us
  • Teller Amendment was added to the declaration of war against Spain

Treaty of Paris

  • Brought an official end to war
  • Spain gave Cuba independence 
  • Us got control of the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico

  • Granted citizenship in 1917
  • They run themselves
  • IN 2012 the majority of Puerto Rico voted for statehood- It is now up to congress.

Cuba

  • Spain gave control of Cuba to the United States with the treaty of Paris
  • The United States granted Cuba its independence as promised with the teles Amendment.
  • The US retained the right to intervene to preserve Cuban independence and stability with the Platt Amendment.
  • The US got control of Guantanamo Bay as well, A naval base we still have control of today.

Thursday-

The Roosevelt Corollary

  • It was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine.
  • Said that the US would be the police officer between Latin America and Europe.

Big Stick Diplomacy

  • The White ships
  • Use power to scare and get what we want
  • Others saw us a a big bully

Dollar Diplomacy

  • Using the US government to guarantee loans to foreign countries by US banks and businesses.
  • Economic imperialism
  • US banks were in control of many businesses in Latin America

President Woodrow Wilson

  • Wilsons ethical and religious beliefs also influenced his foreign policy
  • Practiced missionary diplomacy.
