Monday- U.S. tried to buy Cuba in 1854

In 1895 civil war broke out in Cuba between Spain and Cubans. 

Causes of the Spanish american war

  • The USS Maine sinking. ( the main reason) 
  • The Yellow press. 

The USS Maine was sunk on accident by an internal explosion. 

Emilio Aguinaldo- He was killed by the U.S. 

Teddy Roosevelt- He was the leader of a Calvary unit down in Cuba known as the rough riders. 

Fighting the Spanish was a easy war. 

Tuesday- What are the different foreign policy we use. 

  • War

In 1898 spain gave control of Cuba to the United States with the Treaty of Paris. 

In 1902 the United States granted Cuba its independence as promised with the Teller Amendment. 

The US retained the right to intervene to preserve Cuban independence and stability with the Platt Amendment. 

The US got control of Guantanamo Bay. 

By the late 1800's it was looking as if China would be carved up like Africa had been. 

Japan shocked the world by defeating Russia

Panama Canal

  • The panama Canal cost the US $380 million 
  • 5,600 workers died
  • Over 43,000 workers helped build the damn. 

Wednesday- We were the middle man.

The US sent out a messege, "if you mess with us we will crush you.
