Week of 10/12-10/16

Monday- Was a work day for our groups. 

Tuesday- The gilded age 1870's-1900 

Gilded- to be covered with gold. 

The political machine 

  • A political organization, usually controlled by a single "boss", that controlled people's votes and had administrative control of a city, county, or state. 
  • Very corrupt. 
  • Died out in early 1900's. 
  • Controlled who got elected. 

The kickback system- They charged more taxes and payed people who they owed. 

William Marcy tweed 

  • Was the boss of the Democratic political marching in New York. 
  • Stole millions 

Reforming act- Required most government jobs to be giving through a merit system based on test scores. 

Wednesday-Advances - Skyscrapers, electric street cars, subways 1904, Cash register 1879, automatic dish washer 1889, and Vacuum cleaner 1899. 

They used magazines to wipe. 

Thursday-  Lots of one room school rooms. 

Most kids didn't go to school because they were poor or they had to work to support the family. 

Public schools had mandatory readings from the Protestant bible. 

Parochial school: A school that was supported by a parish. 

Most colleges got there starts in the mid-late 1800's. 

 Friday-

Minstrel show- Variety show or comedy shows of white people acting and looking like black people. 

Central park 1857 was just plain and like a regular park.
