Brett Hopp talked about his Slide show. Why did cities grow so quickly in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Natural and economical disasters . unskilled labors were offered jobs in mills, and factories. what problems did cities faced due to rapid increase of people. people who lived on edge of town had transportation issue. in town cramped until later were new horse came about. many house didn't have running water. water wasn't sanitary. Crime was a major affect. what did some people do to try and help the bad situation in cities. Paw passed in 1879 must have ventilation. and plumbing in your house. people built houses that weren't as cramped. Mass transportation came about. Crime and Fire pickpockets and thieves flourished. Police forces came about in 1844 Didn't do well because to small. Many fire occurred. Not much water. Many buildings were wood and had kerosene lamps. Brody Larsen did his Slide Show Political Machine It was a group of people. they ran the city. the mayor would be elected by the political machine. there was good/bad groups the bad group stole money from the government. the good, do great things project done for the city. Boss Tweed he was a very popular "political machine" in New York City. he stole millions of dollars from the government. he was the head of the democratic party in New York. Corruption. what caused the corruption is the group would either pay off or promise the voters something. Friday: Chapter 8 group talked about their slide show. they talked about how buildings were started to be built out of steel and. how did education changed from in the late 1800's and early 1900's many people dropped out. there were so many problems in school, kids were punished. In the 1800's 64% whites where in school and 32% of blacks went to school.
