Iran- Current Supreme Leader of Iran and a Shia Cleric- Ayatollah Ali Khamenei- Came to power in 89. Former president Mohmoud Ahmadinejad. Nuclear weapons issue started during his term. Current President- Hassan Rouhani. Elected in 2013. He wants to restore the economy and improve bad relations with Western nations. Helped initiate the first high-level talks with the U.S. in decades. Progress in negotiations on Iran's controversial nuclear program. His government has opened up the country to some Western reporters. US intelligence Agencies started to believe that Iran was working towards nuclear weapons. U.S. goal: Eliminate Iran's ability to make a nuclear weapon. Iran's goal: Relief from economic sanctions: Put pressure on them by not importing/exporting. Maintain a peaceful energy program. They have to okay monitoring

Amendments continue-
5th- Grants rights to grand jury, Protects against double jeopardy, Protects against self-incrimination, Cannot be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law. Ratified in 1791. Created to protect basic rights of the accused. Founding Fathers objected many of the ways they were treated by the British in matters of crime and justice. Still important today.
6th- Right to a public trial by jury, Right to be notified of accusation, Right to confront the accuser, Right to obtain witness and retain counsel. Ratified December 15, 1791. Founding Fathers wanted the accused protection from unfair methods of prosecution and investigation. Still protects peoples rights while on trial.
7th- You have the right to a trial cannot charge and hold you without giving you a trial. No more trials and juries. Colonist were very upset. They understood that it was important for fair court system. Importance- It keeps our court system fair. Ratified December 15, 1791
8th- Fines must be fair and not over excessive and punishments have to be fair, not cruel. Wanted punishment to be fair. It was made for people convicted of crime. The British punishment enraged people such as hanging people. Your innocent until your proven guilty even if convicted. Ratified December 15, 1791
9th- Ratified 1791. Rights retained by people. Ex. Right where to live, abortion, right to privacy
10th- Ratified on December 15, 1791. Makes it so the government doesn't have all the power and the people and states have some power.
11th- States can't be sued by a citizen from another state or their state and the case can't be heard by the federal government without the states saying so.
12th- Election of the president and vice president by the electoral college. Ratified 1804. After electoral college, presidents can pick their vice president. If vote isn't majority, the House of Representatives will pick.
13th- Slavery isn't legal in the United States unless it's a punishment for a crime. Ratified January 31, 1865. Without it, we wouldn't have all the rights we have.
14th-Anyone born or living in the United States are citizens and must be treated equally under the law. Passed after the Civil War. Ratified July 28, 1868.
15th- Prohibiting the restriction of voting rights "on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." Ratified February 26, 1870. Gave black males the right to vote
16th- The government takes a portion of the money you make in any job that you do. Established income tax. Today everyone still has a percentage if their income taken by the government. Ratified- February 3, 1913
17th- Each state can have 2 senators and they each can only have one vote. Ratified- April 8, 1913. Importance- Every state has equal votes and powers.
18th- Ratified January 16th, 1919. It was later appealed. Made it legal to sell intoxicating alcoholic beverages. Cause more crimes.
19th- All people can vote. No discrimination. People didn't like it at first. Ratified on August 18, 1920.
20th- Gives the ending dates of office for President and vice president. Ratified in 1933. We know what to do if he/she dies
21st- Government outlawed the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. Repeals the 18th amendment. Ratified December 5, 1933. Supported in rural areas
22nd- The president cannot serve for more than two terms. Ratified March 21, 1947. Today the U.S. don't let the president serve for more than 2 terms.
