Steps to America
Step one- Leaving Home
Common for 1 person from a family to come over
They would eventually come over
Step two- On board the Ship
A ticket to america cost 30$
Three types of accommodations- First class, second class and steerage
First and second class were quickly “inspected” and let on and off the ship
Steerage were only inspected at ellis island
Crossing could take a week to more than a month
Step Three- Inspection
Passengers inspected for contagious diseases such as cholera, plague, smallpox, typhoid fever, scarlet over, measles and diphtheria
If immigrants had any of these diseases they would be deported
Ellis island: closed and opened many different times
Step Four- Beyond Ellis or Angel Island
