Monday- home sick
Tuesday: notes
Positive things about the '20s: Republican philosophy, automobile,
Negative things about the '20s: organized crimes, Red Scare (Palmer Raids, Sacco and Vanzetti), Ku Klux Klan, republican philosophy, teapot dome scandal
Red Scare: Karl Marx-founder of communism-Theory vs Practice of Communism. Theory-poor rise up and overthrow wealthy, take over country, everyone works and do their share, no government. Practice-once no government, anarchy, someone rises up and takes over and theirs a dictatorship. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Vladimir Lenin: communist leader of Russia, took control of everything by then wanted to dissolve government, Stalin comes to power when Lenin dies
Palmer Raids: attorney general (Palmer) and partner(J Edgar Hoover) went after communist, his house was bombed, blamed communists, he announced there would be a Communist takeover that didn't happen.
Sacco and Vanzetti: two men robbed and killed a paymaster and his guard, they arrested these two Italian immigrants, the gun that was used was theirs, found guilty and executed, might have been let off if the red scare didn't happen
KKK: appear when African-Americans get more rights,
Immigration Act of 1924-reduced immigration, restricted Southern and Eastern Europeans, and Jews, severely restricted Africans, Arabs, East Asians, Indians, preserve the ideal of American homogeneity. "WASP"
Wednesday:
Republican decade: 3 presidents who were Republicans, Coolidge believed in laissez-faire, Hoover said that he could see a day when poverty would be stricken from the US, and then the Great Depression started
Republican Philosophy: trickle-down theory (give the rich tax breaks, expand and open new businesses, hire more people, helping middle/lower class), laissez-faire(let the businesses be), rugged individualism (every man for themselves, government won't help people)
Teapot Dome Scandal: Albert Fall and others, sold government land to big businesses and gave it to important government people
Route 66 & automobile: first transcontinental highway, Model T Ford-most people had this car, get in any car as long as its black
heating and cooling-indoor cooling became big in theaters
Charles Lindbergh: first person to fly non-stop across the Atlantic ocean, most famous person in the 20s, barnstorming shows, kid was kidnapped by his worker
Thursday:
Amelia Earhart: famous for trying to be the first person to circumnavigate the world and crashing and dying.
rural areas hold on to moral values and close social relationships, while cities led to opportunity and creativity and freedom, more fun
prohibition: women pushed for it because they were the ones being mistreated, it led to laziness on the job. Banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. Supporters believed alcohol brought about corruption, crime, household abuse, and accidents. Supporters came from conservative families in the South and West. Alcohol was allowed for medicinal and religious purposes. Saloons closed and drunkenness went down. Volstead Act created the Prohibition Bureau-made to supervise the law.
Failed because: people didn't like it, made law abiding citizens law breakers. Prohibition Bureau was underfunded. Organized crime became commonplace-gangs which led to violence
Speakeasies: obtain alcohol illegally, underground secret bars, had a card or password, could be anywhere
Bootlegging: illegally making or distributing alcohol, imports came from Canada, Cuba or West Indies
Organized crime: every city had a gang, gang violence led to only 19% of people supporting the Prohibition, Al Capone-big gangster in Chicago, St. Valentine's Day Massacre, taken down by tax evasion
science vs religion: struggle between Christian fundamentalists and modern scientific people. Christians-everything could be explained by the Bible. Believed evolution shouldn't be taught in schools and creationism should be.
Scopes Monkey Trial: Scopes was a bio high school teacher. Tennessee made it illegal to teach evolution, defend any teacher willing to break the law. Scopes taught evolution. Found guilty, ACLU defend him, Scopes didn't deny anything. Opposing lawyer went to stand and was asked questions about the Bible, Christianity based on Faith.
Buying on credit: buy now, pay later with interest. stock market boomed,
