Monday- Forum post leaders discussed their stories, Presentations on Chapter 6 Section 3

Ch. 6.3:

-Tell me about Andrew Carnegie.- Born in Scotland in 1843 grew up in a poor household and at age 13 he moved, he monopolized the steel industry (bought other companies)

 

-Tell me about John D. Rockefeller.- Growing up in a poor household, growing up he had to help his family (father wasn’t there), He started getting into the oil business, he later grew up to be the most powerful man at age 33

 

-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business?- stating the “weaker die off the stronger live”, stronger businesses keep going while weaker businesses get closed

 

-Explain how companies formed monopolies(vertical/horizontal integration, trusts).- Vertical- You own raw materials, Own refineries, then the railroads

Horizontal- Own refineries, buy out other businesses

 

-How did the government try to regulate business?- Lowering work hours, raising the pay per day

 

-What are labor unions and what is their purpose?- People coming together and fighting for their rights

 

-Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals? Explain/Give examples.- I would say no because a lot of people went on strike and a lot of people got hurt or even killed, Pullman Strike- This company laid off 3,000 employees out of the 5,800 they had and 4,000 people went on strike and protested against it which lead to 30 killed and 57 injured
