1936 Election

  • F.D.R. Won the election

Bonus Expeditionary Force

  • In world war one american soldiers were known as bonus expeditionary forces. They were looking for their bonus checks.
  • They were being treated fairly well at first. Herbert Hoover ordered the military in and was forcing former soldiers out who were just trying to get their money to help their families 
  • MacArthur, Eisenhower, and Patton were famous generals during the war

The three "R's" (Overall goals of the New Deal)

  • Relief for the needy
  • Economic Recovery 
  • Financial Reform 

Fireside chats

  • Radio addresses that president Roosevelt gave everyday. 
  • You would sit next to your fireplace and listen to the radio. It made it seem like he was talking directly to you. 

Deficit Spending and Priming the Pump

  • Deficit Spending is spending more money than you make
  • Our government does deficit spending
  • Prior to the 1930's our country was never in a major debt. We barley did deficit spending
  • F.D.R. promised a lot of different things.
  • Priming the Pump
    • You had to throw a bunch of money into the economy. Spending money on programs
    • This tried to create jobs for people

Roosevelt's background

  • Grew up in a wealthy family
  • Got involved in government during world war 1 
  • A democratic nominee 
  • F.D.R. got polio and everyone assumed that Roosevelt's carrier is over 

Questions about the New Deal

  • What were some of the reasons the New Deal was challenged?
    • Created a very powerful president that led Congress, this was a violation of checks and balances
    • It was a radical departure from Laissez Faire ideals, Created "big government". 
    • Some acts appeared interfering and at worst unconstitutional 
    • Heavy debt burden- the United States was engaged in deficit spending and this was unhealthy for the economy in the long run.

Senator Huey Long

  • Huey Long was like Robin Hood, he wanted to take from the rich and give to the poor.
  • Was shot and killed by Carl Weiss in 1935 
  • His platform was Share-Our-Wealth

New Deal vs 2nd New Deal

  • New Deal
    • Restore Nation's hope
    • Help banks and stock market
    • Provide jobs and relief for the poor
    • Plan and regulate the economy 
  • 2nd New Deal
    • Pass new labor laws 
    • Create and expand New Deal agencies
    • Establish Social Security for older people and unemployed
