-background: Il Duce. born in 1883. smart kid but very disobedient. journalist-teacher, pacifist. But can gain power with war, fought in war and that changed him.
- Italy between the wars: Treaty of Versailles: hoping for more land. Mussolini came to power. Joined the League of Nations (withdrew from it after +/- 15y).
-how they came to power: fascist party- 1919, Fascism: gov led by a dictator: nationalism, racism, imperialism, socialism, no opposition. Black shirts. took power in 1922. Invaded Ethiopia and Albania in the 30's. Promised alliance in 1939. arrested then rescued by Hitler troops 1943. Escaped to Switzerland in 45. May 1945 shot and strung up in Milan.
-how they lost power: went to war unprepared, surrender in 1943 and became allies.
-Discuss the impact of their Homefront and propaganda and what it was like in their country during the war: saved paper, metal and bones to make weapons, victory gardens, war bonds, preparation of the war.
-Discuss major battle strategies: Sided with Germany, attacked the Mediterranean but failed, submarines to attack, declared war with Britain (before the ww2, UK and FR ignored Italy, league of nations placed sanctions), invaded Greece , Sicily (invaded by the allies in july 1943, italians didn't had enough weapons, Mussolini was blamed for war suffering: bread, peace and freedom) and Southern France. US: didn't Italy as enemy, became allies.
-Discuss major battles that the country was involved in:
-Discuss other people/generals from their country in WWII that had a major impact on the war
-Discuss why they won or lost the war: not enough weapons, too slow, poor quality, poor leadership in the army, didn't had any knowledge of war.
-Discuss the impact WWII had on the country: surrendered African territories in 1942, allied power invade Italy in 1943, switch from axis to allied power, Mussolini was arrested. After the war: communism became popular, 1948 democratic republic was established.
