Failing Nation- A country that has failed to do some of the most basic things such as

-providing a education

-losing land that belongs to them

-basically not having a leader

-the inability to provide public services

-the inability to be involved with other

nations or national societies like the U.N.

What the first article is explaining is why countries are failing. Also it states some of the countries that are failing, and falling apart.

A reason a country might start falling apart is because of a civil war, natural disaster, or a invasion/ takeover. Because a country is falling apart, it could lead to terrorism or other criminal groups. The geography of a country also can determine if that country is failing. In ways like non-rich soil, depleting water sources (Lake Chad), or oil not being as abundant, the history of the country also.

Some of the countries that are on the verge of failing are Columbia, which is losing part of its territory, and Kenya because of it 2007 election.

My thoughts on this article are that it’s all true, because it like the situation in Afghanistan and Iran. They do have a good leader and it has lead to an insecure country that it not established, and has terrorism threatening them.

The second article talks about the situation in Somolia. It says that in Mogadishu there is a lighthouse that is the only place considered safe. It is quiet, so, there are kids there playing a specific board game and sometimes smoking. Then it talks about how it use to be a thriving place before it was blasted away, and that there are kids playing still. Next it says how Muhammad grew up. It says that his whole family depended on his income and he could not afford to go to school. Then it says their was a terrorist group that most of his friends joined and died in. Muhammad said that he was so use to the war sounds that he could distinguish different sounds like M16s, mortars, grenades, bazookas.

Then it talked about how Somolia was fought over by the Italians and the Somolilanders. Then Muhammad says that the streets are always violent and there are dead in the streets. Then the government starts to assure the people that the war is turning around.

Somoliland has one port that works well because it is not affected by pirates. This port is called the Port of Berbera. This is where the poor families would bring the wood they have burned into charcoal, so they can feed their families.

Next the article talks about the terrorist group in Somolia called the Shabaab. They would pay their members $150 a month to have them fight. There was also a leader who last year had control of 120 members. He now has 60 or 70. They say they will fight till their last daughter dies.

Then it says that there is a struggle for food. Muhammad is the only one supporting his family and the $150 salary would be a blessing for his family. Now who use to be feeding them is now killing them.

The article end with Somolia still fighting for peace.
