Spanish American war

By 1900, Spain was a dwindling empire

        -Philippines, Guam, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and a few colonies in Africa(Morocco and Western Sahara) 

The U.S. had been interested in Cuba for a long time

        - The U.S. tried to buy Cuba in 1854

Cubans had been revolting against Spain frequently (1868,`878,1886,1895) wanting independence

Many Americans felt sorry for the Cuban people

What caused an increase in tension between the United states and Spain?

  1. In 1895 the civil war broke out in Cuba between Spain and Cuban
  2. The Conflict was described "bloody and brutal"
  3. Newspapers(Yellow Press) reported the brutality of the Spanish General Weyler 

Causes of the Spanish American war

  • The USS Maine sinking
    • The United States thought that Spain blew up the USS Maine 
  • The yellow Press
    • Instigated the war
    • United the general public to want war with Spain
    • Made people feel sorry for the Cubans 
  • Butcher Wyler and his treatment of Cubans in the concentration camps
  • The De Lome Letter
    • De Lome wrote a letter saying that President McKinley was a coward and had no back bone
  • Jose Marti's destruction of US property in Cuba making it look like Spain did it- Jose Marti destroyed U.S. property making it look like Spain destroyed the property not him. So we demanded war with Spain and they eventually went out.
  • To help the Cubans get independence

Declaration of War and the Teller Amendment 

  • On April 25, 1898 the United States declared war on Spain
  • Discuss imperialists vs anti-imperialists in the U.S.
  • Teller Amendment was added to the declaration of war against Spain
  • Guaranteed Cuban independence 

Fronts in the Spanish American war

  • Philippines
    • Emilio Aguinaldo 
    • The United States put a blockade on them
    • Teddy Roosevelt led a cavalry unite- (men who were good athletes, police, hard workers)
  • Cuba
  • Puerto Rico

Treaty of Paris

  • Brought an official end to the war 
  • Spain gave Cuba independence (kind of)
  • U.S. got control of the Philippines 

Tuesday- We started Chapter 10 section 3 questions

Cuba 

  • In 1898, Spain gave control of Cuba to the United States with the Treaty of Paris
  • In 1902, the United States granted Cuba its independence as promised with the Teller Amendment
  • The U.S. retained the right to intervene to preserve Cuban Independence and stability with the Platt Amendment
  • The U.S. got control of Guantanamo Bay as well, a naval base we still have control of today 
  • In 1934, the Platt Amendment was repealed 

Philippines 

  • Emilio Aguinaldo declared Philippine independence from Spain on June 12, 1898
  • After the Spanish American war, the U.S. took over the islands for $20 million dollars
  • The Philippine American war broke out after the Filipinos realized that the U.S. would not give them independence
  • It ended with American control over the islands
  • 12,000-20,000 Filipino soldiers died
  • 200,000-1.5 million Filipino civilians die some contend U.S. committed genocide
  • 4,165 U.S. soldiers died
  • In 1935 the Philippines were granted Common Wealth status

China

  • By the late 1800's it was looking as if China would be carved up like Africa had been 
  • China wanted to prevent this from happening 
  • China was known as "The Boxer Rebellion" 
  • John Hay-Open door policy
    • America wanted China to be free to have free trading rights with all countries 

Chapter 10 Section 4

Russo- Japanese war

  • Japan shocked the world by defeating Russia 

Panama Canal

  • France had started constructing a canal but gave up due to costs and disease
  • In 1903, U.S. buys French company's route for $40 million dollars
  • Before starting, the U.S. had to get permission from Colombia which controlled Panama 
  • Colombia refused to allow U.S. entry
  • With support from the U.S, Panama revolted against Colombia
  • On November 3, 1903 Panama declared independence from Colombia
  • U.S. and Panama then signed canal deal where the U.S. would $10 million and an annual rent of $250,000
  • What made building the canal a huge challenge
    • had to fight disease
    • Soft, volcanic soil made it difficult to remove
    • 5,600 workers died 
    • Cost the United States $380 million

Wednesday- We watched a "bet you didn't know" video on thanksgiving. Went over the Chapter 10 section 4 presentation

The Roosevelt Corollary 

  • It was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine( a warning from Europe to the U.S. saying stay out of the western hemisphere) 
  • Said that the U.S. would be the police officer between Latin America and Europe
  • The U.S. would use force to protect interests in Latin America 

Big Stick Diplomacy

  • "speak softly and carry a big stick" or "big stick" diplomacy
    • What does this mean?
      • The big stick diplomacy means military power

Dollar Diplomacy-President Taft

  • using the U.S. government to guarantee loans to foreign countries by U.S. banks and businesses
  • Economic Imperialism
  • U.S. banks were in control of many businesses in Latin America
  • U.S. said it was needed to keep European powers out of Latin America
  • "Substituting dollars for bullets"
    • Instead of taking over the military we would invest in money
