By 1900, Spain was a dwindling empire
-Philippines, Guam, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and a few colonies in Africa(Morocco and Western Sahara)
The U.S. had been interested in Cuba for a long time
- The U.S. tried to buy Cuba in 1854
Cubans had been revolting against Spain frequently (1868,`878,1886,1895) wanting independence
Many Americans felt sorry for the Cuban people
What caused an increase in tension between the United states and Spain?
- In 1895 the civil war broke out in Cuba between Spain and Cuban
- The Conflict was described "bloody and brutal"
- Newspapers(Yellow Press) reported the brutality of the Spanish General Weyler
Causes of the Spanish American war
- The USS Maine sinking
- The United States thought that Spain blew up the USS Maine

- De Lome wrote a letter saying that President McKinley was a coward and had no back bone

Cuba
- In 1898, Spain gave control of Cuba to the United States with the Treaty of Paris
- In 1902, the United States granted Cuba its independence as promised with the Teller Amendment
- The U.S. retained the right to intervene to preserve Cuban Independence and stability with the Platt Amendment
- The U.S. got control of Guantanamo Bay as well, a naval base we still have control of today
- In 1934, the Platt Amendment was repealed
Philippines
- Emilio Aguinaldo declared Philippine independence from Spain on June 12, 1898
- After the Spanish American war, the U.S. took over the islands for $20 million dollars
- The Philippine American war broke out after the Filipinos realized that the U.S. would not give them independence
- It ended with American control over the islands
- 12,000-20,000 Filipino soldiers died
- 200,000-1.5 million Filipino civilians die some contend U.S. committed genocide
- 4,165 U.S. soldiers died
- In 1935 the Philippines were granted Common Wealth status
China
- By the late 1800's it was looking as if China would be carved up like Africa had been
- China wanted to prevent this from happening
- China was known as "The Boxer Rebellion"

- Japan shocked the world by defeating Russia
Panama Canal
- France had started constructing a canal but gave up due to costs and disease
- In 1903, U.S. buys French company's route for $40 million dollars
- Before starting, the U.S. had to get permission from Colombia which controlled Panama
- Colombia refused to allow U.S. entry
- With support from the U.S, Panama revolted against Colombia
- On November 3, 1903 Panama declared independence from Colombia
- U.S. and Panama then signed canal deal where the U.S. would $10 million and an annual rent of $250,000
- What made building the canal a huge challenge
- had to fight disease
- Soft, volcanic soil made it difficult to remove
- 5,600 workers died
- Cost the United States $380 million

- It was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine( a warning from Europe to the U.S. saying stay out of the western hemisphere)
