Monday - Section 1 -  Imperialism and America 

Domestic policy vs. Foreign policy 

Key words 

Diplomacy - Having to work out things. The profession, activity, or skill of managing international relations, typically by a country's representatives abroad.

Imperialism- a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.

Militarism- Country should be strong military. The belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military. 

Nationalism- loyalty for your country. 

Sphere of influence- a country or area in which another country has power to affect developments although it has no formal authority.

Protectorate - Where a country is controlled or protected by a more powerful country. 

Arbitration- the use of an arbitrator to settle a dispute. Middle person, not a trial.

Tuesday - Talked about the semester test an how its done.

Old diplomacy

Non-interventionist - We stated out of foreign affairs.

Isolationist - US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations.

Passive and reactive - US waited for events to occurs and then acted accordingly. 

Weak army and navy 

New diplomacy

Imperialistic - Going out and conquering territory to create an empire.

Empire - Alfred Mahan (in the navy), Henry Cabot Lodge (leading) , Teddy Roosevelt. 

Stronger Army and Navy 

Interventionist - Especially in central and South America - becoming more involved in other countries affairs.

Monroe Doctrine - Warning to stay out of the western hemisphere 

Strong nationalism - Having strong pride and confidence in one's country. 

Wednesday - Mr. Bruns talked about him being gone and what we are going to be doing.

Imperialism became very common with the major powers of the world 

Which countries where powerful in 1900 (U.S, France, Germany, Great Britain, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Russia, Ottoman Empire-Turkey), Japan)

Why did the US and other countries look to imperialism? Power, Land.

  • Brings military power and prestige to your country.
  • Navel bases and refueling stations.
  • $$$$- For natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods (trade).
  • Belief in cultural superiority - white mean's Burden. - McKinley: "to take them all and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them.
