Protecting social welfare

-Keating Owen Act in 1916 (first child labor act)

-No shipping supplies across state borders- under 16

-no working younger than 16 can work 8+ hours

-secret ballots

-initiative-regular people could create laws

-Referendum- other people could vote for or against these laws

-Recall-forces officials to face another election, before the term is over

 

17th admendment

Each state has 2 senators

Each senator has 1 vote

6 year terms

This gave less power to party bosses and wealthy people

Wages-square deal

They weren't paid well so Teddy Roosevelt tried to help out

He went around and helped and tried to protect their rights

 

1902 Coal strike-

They wanted a 20% raise, a 9 hour work day, and the right to organize a union

The miners got a 10% raise, and a 9 hour work day

 

Road regulation-

Interstate commerce act, it prohibited wealthy railroad owners from colluding to fix high price by dividing the business in a given area

They could not change rates without notifying the public

 

Trust busting

Many trust lowered their prices to drive out competitors

Roosevelt didn't think trusts were harmful

Roosevelt administration filed 44 antitrust suits

“Trust busting President”

Bad monopolies needed to die, good can stay but be on a leash

Meat inspection act

-commissioner of experts

-scathing report- everything was bad;working conditions, food storage

Pure food and Drug act (willy act)

-halted sales

-called for truth given accurate information

 

The conservation of wildlife

-set aside several million acres of land and power sites for preserving

-helped with mineral searching

-transported water to dry areas

 

Du Bois and Roosevelt

In 1909 a number of African Americans joined with prominent white reformers in NY to found the NAACp- the national association for the advancement of colored people

Which had over 6,000 members by 1914

The 2 presidents who followed Roosevelt also did little to advance the goal of racial equality

In 1905 they held a civil rights conference in Niagara Falls.

Federal law passed to protect trade

Revised the Sherman Antitrust act

Banned Monopolistic practices by business

Effect and result of the clayton antitrust act

 

Passed By The U.S. congress as an amendment to clarify and supplement sherman antitrust act Of 1890.

Was the basis for a great many important and much publicized suits against large corporations.

It Prohibited Corporations from acquiring stock from the monopoly.

 

Women's rights

Leader of the women suffrage and wanted the 19th amendment

 

Adamson Act- 8 hour work day

Wilson reinstated segregation in Washington and also started segregation in the military.
