Reconstruction- 1865-1877

The period of time after the Civil War in which the South had to be rebuilt

Lincoln and Johnson wanted to be easy on the south

Lincoln was killed- johnson tries to take over but congress didn't want him in.

Wanted to pass a law that you need permission to replace the president- he broke the law-wanted to be impeached- because of 1 vote he got to be president

 

Rebuilt it economically, socially, politically, and physical

Split south in 5 military districts controlled by US military to make sure they don't revolt

13, 14, 15, amendments passed

Freedmen's Bureau to help ex slaves- provides food, clothing, education, and job training

No carpetbaggers- northern born white republicans who moved south after the war. Many rich political men.
