Today in class, we began by talking about Libya's leader, Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi. He is not a liked person in the United States. I learned that he is scared of elevators so he takes a big tent around and stays there. I think it is kind of weird he is afraid of elevators. We discussed more about Taliban. I learned that the women are very neglected. They can't do sports, they can't have any education, they can't leave their house unless they are totally covered from head to toe. If there is any talk like on the radio, tv, internet or anthing about sex is banned. Taliban is scared that if the people see the outside influences, they will want to do it and they will become morally weak. I learned that the Taliban was the government of Afghanistan from 1996-2001.We began talking about Al-Quada. They don't want any other influences coming in, like Taliban, mainly Europe and the United States. Osama Bin Laden was the leader of Al-Quada. He is originally from Saudia Arabia. The Taliban allowed Al-Quada to go into Afghanistan and set up schools that trained terroists. This was the start of Taliban and Al-Quada working together to strike us on 9/11. I learned that they tried to bomb the World Trade Center in 1992 but failed. Instead of trying to use a truck bomb again in 2001, they decided to hijack planes. Jihad means 'holy war.' Al-Quada is a threat to us.Our class started to discuss the War in Afghanistan. I learned that it started October 7, 2001. We invaded Afghanistan, and we were mainly trying to find Osama Bin Laden and take down Taliban. We found Taliban rather quickly. I learned Obama wants to add at least 6,000 troops to Afghanistan by the end of this year. There are already 65,000 US soldiers over there and 30,000 from other countries. We invaded Afghanistan because of 9/11. We chose them becasue of Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban were there. During the Bush Administration, we started the war in Iraq also. Bush focused more on Iraq and didn't really pay much attention to the war in Afghanistan. Obama is looking it differently and is really focusing on Afghanistan.NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was set up as a buffer against communism after WWII. The blog topic for this week is stuff about Iran and the leader. We get to pick out of like three or four different subjects on this.
