The Culture of the plains Indians- Osage and Iowa Indian Tribes settled in small villages, they lived near the lower Mississippi River. They hunted and planted crops. The western Indians hunted and gathered foods.
Life with a horse- Spanish settlers brought horses to Mexico in 1589. Native Americans were able to travel farther and hunt more efficiently. The majority of tribes left their homes on the Plains. They were able to trade goods.
Living as a Family- Many of the plains people lived in extended groups that were smaller, they usually spoke the same language. Children learned proper behavior. Land was shared for the whole tribe to use.
Settlers Push Westward- The culture of the white settlers differed in many ways. Unlike Native Americans believe that land could be owned, the settlers believed in owning land. They argued that the Native Americans had lost their rights to the land because they hadn't settled down to "improve it."
The Lure of Silver and Gold- The discovery of gold in Colorado in 1858 drew tons of thousands of miners to the region. mining camps and tiny frontier towns were filthy. Fortune seekers including Irish, German, Polish, Chinese, and African-American Men crowded camps and Boom towns.
The Government Restricts Native Americans- All the tribes were to live on the same land. Many of the settlers and tribes clashed each other. In 1834 government passed an act that gave the Native Americans land for their tribes.
Sand Creek Massacre- John Chivington sent a telegram that read, "I want no peace till the Indians suffer more." He and his troops attacked the Cheyenne Tribe. November 29th, 1864 they attacked and killed over 150 people. There were about 200 warriors and 500 women and children.
The Bozeman Trail- Extended through the Sioux hunting ground and Bighorn Mountains. Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed and the Sioux agreed to live along the Missouri River.
