Today in class I learned that labor unions are when people aren't happy with their jobs and they so they join a union to try and change things. A lot of companies made it illegal and it you were going to join on they wouldn't hire you. They hurt big businesses. The big factory owners took advantage of the workers. They struggled at the beginning and in the early 1900's they started to really take effect. In the late 1800's were against the strikers. The Farmers and Populist Movement Chapter 3:In the late 1800's the prices of the crops were falling and the farmers had to take out a second mortgages so they could pay for things. The good farming land was becoming limited. Banks were fore closing and greenbacks were taken out of the government's circulation. Farmers had to pay back loans in dollars.Farmers paid high amounts to transport grain. The lack of competition means that they had to pay more. Kelley started the Patrons of Husbandry and they became known as the Grange. The membership grew to more than 4 million and the Southern Alliance was the biggest. They couldn't unionize because they were spread out all around the country. On July 2,1882 a populist Party convention was in Omaha, it demanded to give people a greater voice in their government. It lift to the debt from the farmers to other workers. The senators were elected by a popular vote. The populist were all about giving the people more power. The common labors wanted to restrict immigrants because they would work for less. They also called for an eight hour work day. The more money you make the bigger percent of money they take out of your pay check. They also wanted more more to be printed for an increase in money supply. Farmers became overextended with debts and loans. 15,000 businesses and 500 banks collapsed. This caused the Depression.I don't think that it was very fair that the farmers had to take out second mortgages on their farms. If I was a farmer back them I would definitely not be happy with the banks! I also don't think it was fair of the railroad runner so charge higher prices! I can't blame alliances because I probably would have done the same thing!
