Today, the first thing we did was go over the friedman video. I'm trying to understand this, but it goes too quickly and is too confusing):Flat World/Current Events #3 Test-50 Points1. Describe what the “flat world” means before watching the lecture?I think the term “flat world” means the world is getting smaller and smaller with all the technology and ways we can communicate.2. Briefly describe Globalization 1.0.• Lasted from 1492-early 1800’s• Shrunk the world from size large to medium• Built around countries globalizing3. Briefly describe Globalization 2.0.• Early 1800s-2000• Shrunk world from medium-small• Based on companies globalizing4. Briefly describe Globalization 3.0.• Size small-tiny• Flattening global economic playing field• Built around individuals globalizing• This era of globalization is most likely not going to be built around white people who dominated the first two eras, it will most be dominated by people of all different races5. How was the Berlin Wall a flattener of the world? The fall of the wall allowed us to see and think of the world as a single flat plane. The wall divided the world into democracy and communism. It was a symbol of the cold war, and when it came down, the world became one.6. What was the importance of Netscape going public on 8-9-95?It was really the Netscape browser brought internet alive so that more people in different places could connect with one another, not just scientists using them.It contributed to commercializing protocols that the internet wouldn’t be controlled by one company and that it would be open to everyone.Triggered .com boom which was basically online businesses. This led to .com bubble. Because of the fiber optic cables, people can communicate almost instantly.7. What is outsourcing/offshoring and why are many Americans opposed to it?Outsourcing is a new form of collaboration. It is where the main company is still here but certain parts of the industry are overseas. They do some jobs that can be done overseas and they will work for less over there.Accounting taxes done at some big accounting firm. People think they do it, but they ship it out to Asia, they crunch the numbers, send them back, and eventually it gets back to you.Offshoring is when a factory closes down and moves to a different country to cut costs. Everything is cheaper pretty much in a different country.In-sourcing is where a company decides they are going to bring a different company to do work for them because they’re better at doing it. UPS is a big example. They don’t just deliver packages. They also do things like fix your broken Toshiba computer, and even though you think you’re sending it to Toshiba, it’s really a guy in brown shorts fixing it. Overall, it just saves money.8. Give two examples of “open-sourcing”.Mozilla Firefox is the alternative to internet explorer, and the Lennox operating system, which is the free alternative to windows vistaWikipedia is an alternative to encyclopedias and text books.9. What does Friedman mean by “informing”?Google is an example. Informing is his name for search. He can inform himself and collaborate data by himself. TiVo is also a form of informing.10. What are the “steroids” according to Friedman?Wireless voice over the internet and file sharingTurbo charging all six new forms of collaboration now he can do any of those from anywhere with any deviceCell phones too11. According to Friedman, how do people need to change in the future to succeed in a “flat world”?He said you have to horizontalize yourself. A lot of young people think vertically. Think globally, you can’t just think you will just be competing with people from Harlan, Iowa. You really need tech skills. And you have to be able to adapt. If you don’t, you will struggle, MAJORLY.12. Why should young people be concerned with the “flat world”?It’s our generation that is going to have to compete for jobs with people that are all over the world that now have the same opportunities because of the flat world we’ve created. They will work for cheaper and do it just as well as us Americans can. If you don’t adapt, you will be left behind.13. Define what Friedman means by the “flat world” now that you watched the video. We have created a global web enated platform where time distance and geography don’t matter that. Then we talked about our free choice blogs from this week.Cheyna did hers on safe houses. They started in 1994 and 3-10 million children witnessed assaults against their parents.Dru did hers on kids without birth certificates. It prevents them from basic rights. They have to borrow a lot of money to go see doctors. Some of the rights that you dont have when you dont have a birth certificate are things liek voting getting married being employed getting a passport, registering your children once they're born.Courtney did hers on Obama communicating with China. Our countries don't agree on many topics. Global warming is one that we agreed we need to change and so that was the topic most of the visit. Luke did that too. He touched on that Obama went to a school in Shang Xi (spelling?) and he talked to them about us needing to get along or something..?Jessica's story was Fort Hood. It was about a psychiatrist that went on a shooting ramapge. He killed 10 soldiers and wounded a total of 31 people. The reason for the shooting might be his upcoming deployment to Iraq.Jena also did that story.Justice did a story on a mom being sent to Afghanistan, and she had to make the choice to either go fight or take care of her kid. She chose her baby.Haley did hers on a woman in KC Missouri that admitted to burrying her baby after being raped):Taylor's story was about a 5 year old girl who was found dead in North Carolina. Her mom is being charged with kidnapping, a felony and prostitution charges. Another guy was charged for it too, because he was caught on video with the girl.Erin's was on how November 14 is diabetes day. Everything was lit up in blue lights and everything, and it sounds like it was pretty cool.
