Today in class, we started off by going over the Friedman video questions again. I corrected my questions and added more info as you can see below. We are going to have an oral test over this, and I'm pretty sure I am not going to do the best. This stuff does not make much sense to me. After we went over the questions, we went into blog discussion. We talked about our free choice blog that we did last weekend. We have another free choice blog to do this week. I learned that a safe house is where physically and mentally people can stay to get help. Dru told us about how there are lots of kids who don't have birth certificates.Courtney did hers on how Obama just visited China. She said that we don't really agree on any topics but we have been talking with them for 30 years, so that helps. Jessica told us about a shooting in Fort Hood, Texas. One of a soldiers shot and killed 10 and wounded 31. They aren't positive on why he chose to do that. The man was shot by police officer. Luke expanded on Obama's trip to China. He talked to students. Justice told us about how a mom had to choose her son or go to the military. She had to take care of her child because she had no other child care plans.Taylor said that there was a five year old girl found in a ditch in North Carolina. The mom was trying to sell her kid so she was charged. There was another man charged who was carrying the girl. I told about how there are one billion people in the world starving and how the United Nations are trying to set up a program to help that.*REVISED QUESTIONS*1. Describe what the “flat world” means before watching the lecture?I think that the ‘flat world’ means that… yeah, I have no idea – maybe that technology is ‘taking over’ the world and is progressing really fast.2. Briefly describe Globalization 1.0.1492 – 1800s. It shrunk the world from size large to size medium. The countries were globalizing together for land and resources.3. Briefly describe Globalization 2.0.Early 1800s to 2000. It shrunk the world from size medium to size small. Companies globalize during this time. McDonald’s is an example.4. Briefly describe Globalization 3.0.2000 – Present. It’s shrinking the world from size small to tiny. It’s built around people globalizing. Individuals do this.5. Why was the Berlin Wall a flattener of the world? It came down. The fall of the wall helped us think about the world being a flat plane. No one really ever talked about globalization because there was a wall in the way.6. What was the importance of Netscape going public on 8-9-95?A small startup company went up in California. It really brought the internet ‘alive’ so people from different places and ages could connect together. It triggered the .com boom.7. What is outsourcing/offshoring and why are many Americans opposed to it?A new form of collaboration – Off shoring is when China joins the Wind Trade Organization. Out Sourcing is built around Y2K.In sourcing is where a company decides they are going to bring a different company to do work for them because they’re better at doing it. UPS is a huge example. They don’t just deliver the products, they do the work behind the scenes too. It saves money.Offshoring is when a factory closes down and moves to a different country to cut costs. Everything is cheaper pretty much in a different country.Outsourcing is where a main company is still here but certain parts of the industry are overseas. They do some jobs that can be done overseas and they will work for less over there. This happens a lot when we send things to Asia and no one even knows it’s shipped. We ship it, they fix it and send it back.8. Give two examples of “open-sourcing”.New form of collaboration and innovation – people collaborating on the same thing to undercut another. They make programs (MAC, XP)Open sourcing is free and usually better.Wikipedia is a good example.Open office is free – unlike Microsoft Office.Mozilla Firefox is an alternative to Windows Internet Explorer.Lennox operating system is the free alternative to Windows Vista.9. What does Friedman mean by “informing”?Google is an example. Informing is his name for search. He can inform himself and learn data by himself. Tivo is also a form.10. What are the “steroids” according to Friedman? They are wireless voices of the internet and sharing files. Cell phones are another example. It is when you can connect with anyone at anytime.11. According to Friedman, how do people need to change in the future to succeed in a “flat world”?You have to horizontalize yourself. A lot of people think vertically and we have to change that. You have to think globally, not just locally. Don’t avoid tech skills. You have to adapt to the new ways of life. You will struggle if you don’t.12. Why should young people be concerned with the “flat world”?If your not, you will get left behind. You will be competing with everyone in the world for careers.13. Define what Friedman means by the “flat world” now that you watched the video. We have created a global web enabled platform for multiple forms of sharing knowledge and work ir-respectable of time, distance, geography and language.
