Today we are continuing with Ch. 9 blogs. What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?-White, rich males had all the power. They called for the direct election of U.S. senators. (17th Amendment) These made the country more democratic because they got to choose. The common people got to elect who they wanted that were like them, who wanted to help the common people. The secret ballot also helped the country. This was so people could not pressure or intimidate you. When the governor or elected official was doing a terrible job, the people could initiate a recall, when they could vote earlier than the date that is was supposed to be. Initiative and referendum is when the common people could initiate a bill and if it received enough signatures, it would go on the next ballot. Then people could vote, and it passed if the majority of people wanted it. This was state by state, not national. Direct primaries allowed the states to choose the best candidate for the presidential election. What is women’s suffrage? What approaches did women use to gain the right to vote?-Men were the only ones in the government. Men thought women were to stay at the home and cook and clean. Mary Wollstone Craft spoke out about how men and women should be equal. Seneca Falls Convention was the first time got together to try to push for the right to vote in 1847. Women were upset when African American men earned the right to vote because they thought they were still above them and were racist. The three prong strategy was one way women tried to get the right to vote. They would go to the government and ask, but men still didn’t stick up for them. They said how they were citizens like everyone else. Men did not want women to vote because they worried about them taking their jobs and who would take care of things at the home. Women had to fight for 41 years until earning the right to vote. In 1920, the 19th Amendment passed which gave them the right to vote. The National American Women Suffrage Association was a group that worked to getting the right to vote. Susan B. Anthony was one that was involved greatly. What were the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs? Describe the Federal Reserve System.-Before the P.A., people had tariffs (tax on imported good), not taxes. High tariffs were important to government and big businesses. Big businesses would benefit from these because this will keep foreign products high, and not have as much competition. The Progressives worked for the income tax based on a bracket, which passed in 1913 with the 16th Amendment.
