Today we continued presentations.. again9. What did the progressives do to make food and drugs safer for the people of the United States? The meat was bad because they didnt have labels and things telling them when it was butchered so people started getting sick. Meat had nasty stuff in it like poo, poison, spit, sawdust and many other things. Later a law was passed saying that they had to label their products to show what was in it and to show how long it has untill it will not be good to eat, this prevented people from getting sick and even dying. Today, we have labels with much more information.11. What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States?Businesses were in control of their own business before the progressive era. The government's pholisiphy was to back off and stay out of businesses' business. The Innerstate Commerce Correction made rates in businesses a certain amount. You had to be fair to everybody. The Clayton Anti-Trust Act made it legal for coorperations to be able to break up. The FTC could go in a shut the company that was being unfair. The ICC kept running with railroads and trucking. Then it was shut down in 1985. The remaining functions transferred over to dealing with transportation issues.
