Today in class we had our second Cold War Project work day. I have Reagan’s Defense Initiative and I started by reading his speech about it.

He starts out by saying that we have prevented nuclear attacks by balancing defensive and offensive forces as deterrence. He says that we have relied on this deterrence instead of creating a defense and we shouldn’t do that any more. The Soviets have upset the balance by building up forces. Because of this we should seek another means of deterrence. He then says that he has announced a Strategic Defense Initiative which would look for ways of nuclear defense.

He says that they would also like to negotiate reductions in nuclear arms. He says that it would provide deterrence against Soviet expansion of ballistic missiles. It would help to pressure the Soviets into getting rid of their ballistic missile programs. He says that we would work with our allies to further the program. However even though we would have defenses against nuclear weapons we wouldn’t seek military superiority.
