The Nuclear Arms Race was to gain authority and power in nuclear warfare. The Soviet Union and the US were the main two, but also their allies. Other countries around the world began to make nuclear weapons. The Soviets were very concerned by all the bombs the US was developing. JFK announces building nuclear shelters. If the Soviet Union launched missiles against the US, we would launch missiles back. This idea was called Massive Retaliation and Mutual Deterrence. US was the first country to use nuclear weapons. The Trinity was the first nuclear war test and it happened on July 16, 1945 in New Mexico. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki came right after, they happened in Japan.
The Anti-Nuclear Movement was a social movement that disapproves of nuclear weapons and technology. The purpose of the movement was to reduce or stop the use. The peace sign was originally a sign made for a campaign on nuclear disarmament.
Nixon’s Visit to China… Brooke Weihs
In 1971, Richard Nixon went to China. This was the first time any US president went to China to the PRC. On July on 1971, Henry Kissinger, Nixon’s advisor, secretly visited Beijing during a trip to Pakistan. Nixon was the 37th president for the US. He went to China to normalize relations between the US and China. It reduced trade restrictions. In 1960, PRC split form its main ally, the Soviet Union. In 1970, the struggles became stronger and Nixon wanted to put the conflict towards the Cold War. PRC is People’s Republic of China.
One-China Policy was the main thing that came out of Nixon’s visit over to China. The US and other nations felt that the People’s Republic of China government in Beijing was the main legal government of China. Countries that wanted relations with the PRC had to understand the policy and couldn’t have relations with the Republic of China (ROC). The communist party was the ruling political party. Civil War broke out between the Kuomintang, the ROC, and the CCP for control over China. During the Cold War the ROC was still known to be the main government in China until 1971, when it was replaced by the RPC.

Détente was used to ease tension. Soviet Union wanted to use it so they could get more trade. It is French for easing of tensions. Salt 1 helped reduce ballistic missile launchers between the US and Soviet Union. Salt 2 was a replacement with a long term treaty. Salt 2 never got passed.
