Today we did a write to learn on Darfur and Somolia. Mr. Bruns forgot that he said he would push the Asia map test back to Monday and Tuesday, but we reminded him, and now that's when it is! :) We finished up our Africa projects with the Congo. The conflict is there are civil wars in Congo and people just start fighting other tribes. Known as the Africa World War. The civil wars are part of the reason for that name. They're arguing over minerals and land (resources) and fight to get the better of them. They're mostly from Rwanda and Uganda. Lots of it spilled over from the Rwanda genocide. Right now there are many human rights violations and people are dying from lack of sanitation, food, and all-over poor conditions. The fights are brutal and there are lots of rapes going on. Lots of children involved have been under 5 years old. Several of the groups have been recruting young boys to carry out the murders and such. Effects are there are lots of people that are having trouble, some people are still starving and suffering malnutrition, it destroyed the contries infrastructer and government. It's the deadliest conflict since World War II. 5.4 million people have died, mostly by starvation and dieses. Belgium had control of Congo until the 1960, then gave them their independence, which made them very poor. They had a dictatorship that started in 1965 and renamed Ziear. In 1997 a dictator was overthrown by a revolation that was supported by Uganda and Rwanda. Cabilla took over power and renamed it The Democratic Republic of Congo. The UN has sent over a peacekeeping force called MONUC to help abade the rebel movements of the country. The IRC has been working to rescue people, rebuild communities, and strengthen the capacity for recovery. We then started watching Hotel Rwanda!
